Hi all, something very strange has happened--twice now--and I wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced the same thing.

I have made my own "ghetto Ryedale" using a coin comparitor I bought on eBay and a metal ramp to feed the pennies into it. It has so far worked great, albeit slowly, but twice now it has let two wheat pennies through as if they were zinc. One was a 1923 and the other was a 1944. I weighed them and the both came out to 3 grams so I don't think they are fake zinc coins, but every single time I put them through the comparitor it reads them as zinc. I've put other '44s through and it reads those just fine. Anyone else have a similar experience or an explanation?

Thanks,

Ray

Was there a lot of wear on those two coins?

Yes, especially the 1923. But how could that affect a comparitor reading?

The composition of the 1944 is different than your memorial you probably use. It was made from shell casings after the war and has a bit of tin in it. Same thing with the 1923. You need to search your zinc pile before you toss them, you'll find older wheaties and IHC's in there.

Hoard now and hold on!
