Ok the sale is over my wife said it was ok to "tell". I have told my wife the story of how in 1980 I bought rings out of the old tray in dime stores and local drug stores below scrap. She is an ardent fan of " Wally-world"(you know) and noticed that the "old gold" jewelry that had been on clearance was further reduced by 40% before Christmas ,lasting until Jan 1.Well she bought a couple "heavy"rings she had hand 'weighted" brought them home to the gram balance and low and drool, they were 30-40% under scrap. At the time we were shopping I had rushed her up and complained about not even looking at their jewelry. I ate several pounds of crow over the next week as we drove from wally world to wally world over the next severals days(stopping at motels some nights)We took our handy little pocket gram scales and marched straight to the 40% clearance section at 30-40 wallies, soon we new the weight of most items by sight.I especially enjoyed the $ 5.20- 2005 graduation charms that weighted in at 1.1 gram of 14kt. The best find was a man`s bracelet for $10.80 that weighed in at 8.5 grams of 10kt. I just wish we(she) had discovered the sale when it first started. If you think going to the teller and asking for 50 rolls of halves is tough try setting a scale on the jewelry counter at Wally-World.I`m still eating crow to the tune of $1,500 profit. Yes listen to your wife , hmmmm sometimes she is right. Crow goes well with a glass of ice cold cash.
I have had that same idea once. At a local Target they had some 10k men's rings for 9.88 that were 60% off plus an additional 10% off, but it felt that they understood the 'scrap' value and would never sell it that low. But it seems I may have to look over my options again.
How did it look bringing in a scale and weighing stuff? Did the workers get angry having to get suff out and you saying 'it doesnt weigh enough' and having to put things away? Any complaints in general?
I say let them huff and puff.....thats why they get paid by the hour.
My local coin dealer did the same thing a few weeks ago... Bought a bunch of gold from a Major Department store for less than scrap during one of their big after-holiday sales.
I'm definitely going to have my eyes open from now on. I wonder if there will be any big Valentines Day sales???
That story brings a tear to my eye. No joke...I use to know a couple that made good "hobby" money traveling around and buying Legos from stores like Wally-World. The deal was that the stores would put higher discounts on the Lego sets the older the sets got, but in the world of the Lego collectors some of the discontinued older sets were actually gaining fast in value.
