i think you're mind is tricky you into thinking there is a pattern there, the human mind is really good a finding/inventing pattern even when they don't exist. i believe it's purely random
it's definitely random. Also you can't look at that one box as the start and end to your sort. Since you are sorting many boxes finding one at the start of one box is really like finding it somewhere in the middle of a large continuous sort.
And on a personal note; it really sucks to find a couple keepers at the start and then get skunked for the remainder. For halves i pull all rolls with AG or proofs showing and search last just to off-set the potential skunking factor for the other rolls. Better to end with finds then skunks...
