I've been a long time lurker, but a recent find has inspired me to come out of the shadows..
Hitting my pickup banks on Monday, I grabbed 100$ in nickels. I try to not get more than 20-40$ at a time from a bank, and I use my kids as cover (filling in whitman folders given to them by their grandmother). Otherwise I start hearing about how coins are for merchants and there is a fee, especially from BoA. I recommend this angle if possible. For me it is only a slight bend of the truth, as I have 3 little monkeys who love to open rolls. Tellers, especially female ones, are far more likely to be eager to help me playing the role of a good father, than that of a cheap coin collector...
Anyway, out of 20 rolls from a local US Bank, I pulled out 70 Buffalos and about 20 1938-42's Not a single war nickel.
14 of them were dateless. I have yet to create a whole list of dates, I just picked up a whitman folder today to stuff them into, as my normal 2x2 system is overloaded now...
Best dates: 1924-S (two of them, full dates, both solid VG-8) 1939-D (VF-30 ish, couple nicks in Thomas)
These are my best nickel finds.
Until this herd, I've found two buffs in the past two years (started copper and silver hoarding in 2008) I've also found one bent Indian Head cent, 1906 (full liberty). My best cent find was a 1914-s, VG8.

My three boys accompany me to the bank as well; it does take the spotlight off of me a bit. |

Nice. Finds like this help us tell ourselves we aren't crazy, hehe |

Or it tells us that we aren't AS crazy as some make us out. Welcome to the "herd"! Ha! |

Thanks for the welcome everyone!
I have not been back to that bank, I figured any more would be long gone, as they go through many boxes of coins a day.
So here's how I think this worked, let me know if my logic fails anywhere.
More banks are getting coin counting machines, (as my credit union recently did), people are hurting economically, and dumping jars of unsearched coins into bank counters, coin star machines, etc... Those places then sell those bagged unsearched coins to the coin rolling companies (I see mostly NF String and son around here), which dump them in big hoppers, roll them, box them, and sell them back to banks. No human eyes.
In this case, perhaps a junkie, thief, or young kid found an old jar somewhere, cashed them in without a second thought...
Does this sound reasonable?

Yeah you are probably right. The other possibility is an estate or an elderly person that doesn't realize they are valuable or has them mixed in with modern coins. |
