Early this week, I went to one of my usual source banks and bought a lot of 20 nickel rolls.

Normally, the pickings are getting pretty slim on nickel rolls in Canada and I would expect to find 2 to 4 Ni (pre-1982) nickels at best from a roll or a 5 to 10% yield.

When I got home, almost every roll have pure nickel it. I also sensed a collection was dumped because I found nearly every date from 1922 (expect key date 1925 and 1926) to the present. In the end I wound up keeping 16 rolls and returning 4 to my dump bank.

After this run of good luck, I though maybe other denominations were dumped as well. So I went back to the same bank ordered more nickels, pennies, dimes and quarters.

Unfortunately, nickel stats were back to normal. I got 2 rolls of pure nickels out of 20. Penny hunting was better than usual, I found a ton of BU pennies from the 1970's. My penny yield was 80% copper, I usually get 40% at best. Unfortunately, quarter hunting was bad, no silver found. But the dimes rolls made the trip worth while. Out of twenty rolls, 4 rolls were brimming with nice white silver edges. I found 29 silver dimes among a lot of BU 1970's dimes.

The moral of the story, if you get a better than normal yield in one denomination, go back try all the other denominations. Silver may be lurking in the bank vault.

Sounds like a good bank run. Lots like someone had their collection taken back to the bank.

Nice report.Good deductive reasoning. Why let the alloy program profit. If we keep our senses keen I believe there will be more of these events happening in the near future.Seems coin returns are on the rise.Sometimes taking the few extra minutes talking with a teller will pay off.One of my pickup banks had so much coin they had to schuedle a earlier pick up because they ran out of vault space.
So only 1 bag for me there, but I made up for it at another bank when a competing sorter didn't make his pickup, found a nice 1909vdb for the effort.Happy hunting.

Available again! $100 of Copper Lincoln Memorials for $145 shipped.

I had something similar happen to me. I got a $20 bag of pennies a few weeks back and found $8.29 in wheats, none were older than 40 but it was still a really cool find. I agree that more and more collections will be gettin dumped in the near future as people get desperate for cash.

Did you find any circulating commemorative coins in the rolls?

Canada is a numismatist's paradise,as there is a lot of circulating commemorative coins in circulation.

There has been 2 commemorative Loonies put into circulation this year so far - the Winter Olympic Games one (which I do have) & the Canadian Navy Centenary (which I would like to get).

I was dumping nickels and dimes at my local bank, and the teller asked me what i look for. They all know that i search the coins, anyways she remarked that one of the tellers had to break open a roll of nickels and found the entire roll was buffalo nickels. I asked if they were still around she said the teller bought them all.

I didn't ask if i could buy their other nickels since i just returned some, but in hind sight perhaps I should have done it. I don't know when they found them so i'll let it pass.

Selling Copper cents. $0 FV available at 1.4xFV. Also interested in trading for wheat pennies and other coins Please pm me for requests or inquiries.
