I had an interesting experience today.
I dropped off $500 of halves and the teller offered me another $500 box and I asked her if she really minded that since I was dropping a $500 bag today. She said of course not; she said it was no big deal since they send out large bags of coins all the time.
So, I asked her if she could order me halves every week and she said she would be able to sell me whatever she had on hand but not make special orders.
The box she gave me today was sealed so no bank tellers had opened it. When I looked at the rolls there was a slit on each of the rolls on the opposite side from the seam of the roll. There was a piece of tape over the slit to hold the wrapper together.
Made me wonder what happened.
Do you think they were defective rolls and someone had to tape them or was someone at brink's rim searching for silver and taped them back when they didn't find any silver.
I made it through $250 and no silver so far.

I think they were searched by another collector and then resealed. Think about it.. Why would a bank have a $500 box of halves on hand if they never order any? Search em anyway.. other searchers occasionally miss a 40%er. Keep an eye out for proofs also.. I have found several proofs in rolls I am sure have been previously searched. Besides.. you can bump up your silver searcher score by sorting though all those skunk boxes. |

You know how you get a box sealed from Brink's; the seal was still on the box which makes me think it was not searched by another collector.

You would think that.. but there are many very talented people out there. Some of us can even open up a bank wrapped roll to change the orientation of the end coins from H/H to H/T and reseal it without using one of our automatic coin rolling machines or our crimping machine.. and it still looks like a bank wrapped roll.
The other possibility is that that Brinks got the rolls that way and just boxed them up rather than reroll them.
But the $500 question is.. Why would a bank even have a $500 box of halves on hand? Perspiring minds want to know. The only sealed boxes of halves I have ever gotten were from my weekly orders.. and I have never had one of my many banks tell me they just happen to have a sealed box of halves on hand. |

Cool I did not know that.
Do you think I should still pick up and dump at the same bank even if the teller is ok with it?
I know some banks would not be happy with that arrangement.

I normally don't pick up and dump at the same bank. But for small quantities this is probably ok as long as they are cool with it. Besides, since they are not ordering for you, they are not really a real source bank. It depends on what your dumping options are. Halves can be kind of tricky to dump.. since nobody really wants them. I recently found a new convenient, high speed way to dump large amounts of halves. It you happen to be near a casino, you just take a few heavy bags of halves in and have them convert it to folding money for you so you can play blackjack. |

Actually when i first started out doing this in Northern VT a guy used to order a box or two each week but would only buy out half a box or so at a time.
So i ended up going in there with my savings (good old no extra cash college days), and cleaned his order out weekly It got weird when I started showing up right before him and bought his entire order.
One time i can remember i was first in line and the teller forced me to split a box, i happened get first dibs on a proof and walker showing up the ends (could i have those 2 rolls instead of these 2 please... )
Some banks just get odd coinage and currency from collectors asking for them that never come through to buy it all from the bank. |
