Hey all, as I'm still in my infancy of scrapping, I had a question for you. I drug this Toro lawnmower out of its weedy grave today. Its been on my property for at least 12 years and never touched. I went to scavange it today and was pleasantly suprised to see that many portions of it are aluminum. I used my magnet on many parts and it did NOT stick to the red frame/shell. Am I correct in assuming this is aluminum? There is also NO rust on it after 12 years. Any thoughts?

yes some are alum. Make sure you drain the oil out of the block before you scrap it. Yards by me want them drained...

that edge showing with the paint off looks like galvanized aluminum to me.

Hoard now and hold on!

Thanks for the input guys!! In reference to aluminum, does it all go together?? I have Al wire, conduit, computer parts etc. or should I separate it. No cans at this time, I know they should be separated.

We talking about lawn mower frames?

Magnesium is what burns right?

Are you thinking of Manganese, like what is in Warnickels?

When I used to be a firefighter we used to love to put out car fires... the rims were usually made of magnesium and would pop, spit, and flare up like fireworks. Used to scare the bejesus outta the rookies

The reason you don't find aluminum lawnmower decks very often scrapping:

1) They are more expensive and fewer are made to begin with.

2) They don't rust out and last several times longer than the steel ones.

A simple physical way to tell magnesium from aluminum is magnesium will chip and break under a steel knife, while most aluminum will curl.

Also, as noted magnesium will burn a bright white. Make sure you just use a very small sample for this and keep it FAR away from the rest of the material.
