After much debate, and going over figures in my head hundreds of times, I have just purchased a Ryedale Coin Artist. It will ship early next week. Now the addiction goes up a notch. I've been buying more than I have been sorting due to time restrictions. Now the little time I have to search I can fully utilize. So if I come on here with questions, I expect help....hehe. Now the "man-I-wish-I-would-have-ordered-this-last-week syndrome is setting in. Have to pass time tomorrow morning buying more food for my new penny monster....

I'm sitting on the fence, too. I started testing the waters at some banks to see about getting pennies, with some mixed reactions. One teller basically told me to get lost when I asked for pennies, saying that they charged a fee per roll and that they did not deal in coin at that branch. This was the head teller, no less. The next bank I asked "how much do you charge to get boxes of pennies in" and the guy looked it up and said that as long as I kept it at under $5000 per month that there would be no fee. What a difference! I ordered $250 worth to see what kind of % would be copper. Now just have to see how hard it is to dump the zinc. |

1) Keep ordering pennies and encourage them to keep customer wrapped rolls as well. 2) Search everywhere for a no fee/low fee coin accepting machine - often found at Credit Unions... 3) Get a Ryedale. 4) Become a frugal nut bag and divert every spare cent into pennies. 5) When FIAT World falls apart...you will have copper and possibly zinc to trade for required daily items....example: you will still buy a foal of bread for 3 or 4 rolls of copper, when everyone else will need $100.... 6) Start early....save hard. |

You will be very happy. Productivity is one thing but there is a true "fun factor" that I can't resist. I have to get my Ryedale fix every day. Congratulations - don't worry, you won't be missing anything if you resort your zinc. |

Thanks for the replies. I know I'll be happy. I plan on resorting my zincs for those old Indians and wheats. A major factor in my purchasing one now as opposed to later, is my fear that the Cu will begin to be pulled commercially and by the mint. Similar like what happened in Canada with nickels or whatever.* Commercial is what we as a group need to fear the most. Especially if the melt ban is lifted. Kind of a "fear" factor motivation mixed with the fact that I knew I had to have one as soon as I realized it existed. That is why I have always bought beyond my means to hand sort. As long as you have space, you can have more pennies. You can never lose money.

My advice.....Get more pennies!!, the day mine arrived I burned throught all of the pennies I had stock pyled in less than 2 hours!!! then spent the rest of the day trying to find any quantity of pennies to pour into that thing!!!
YOU WILL LOVE IT!!! It will pay for itself in weeks!

Congratulations! Now you will be hanging out in bank lobbies begging for boxes of pennies like the rest of us. This seriously improves your chance of finding that Indian too, since you will be processing 20 times as many pennies. It's a volume thing. And if you need a hand sorting fix you can always hand sort your copper and pull the wheat cents out.
Maybe you can find one those banks like coppercoppercopper that will let you order $5000 a month. You can get the rest of the ones you need each month from some other banks. |

I am in the same boat you are. Due to time issues, instead of waiting later in the year to get a Ryedale, I decided to place an order this week. I have been a die hard hand sorter for a while, but I rather spend more time sourcing cents and dumping zincs than trying to 'free' the coppers. I will still be handing sorting (probably just the customer rolls) so I can create a box of 82 zincs. |

Man, I'm so pumped. Sounds silly, but I couldn't get to sleep last night because I was plotting my bank routes out. Buy here, dump there, yada yada....Epaphras, I know what you mean about being a die hard hand sorter. I'll probably hand sort coppers sometimes to search for wheats as HoardCopperByTheTon stated. PennyProspector, I'm worried about running out too. I've been saving up. Only sorting when I had to. No more sorting until it arrives. Already getting the shakes....

| I completely understand.. I remember the feeling. My only regret was that I waited as long as I did to buy my Ryedale. I think I sorted close to a hundred boxes the first week I had mine. Sure your girlfriend is excited now.. but just wait until she starts thinking you are spending too much time playing with your machine. I had to have my machine shipped to my work because my girlfriend thought I had too many coin machines and would have gone nuts over me buying another machine. She has a hard time understanding that different machines do different things. To her, counting machines, wrapping/rolling machines, sorting machines are all the same.. they are all just coin machines. She can't understand why I have so many of them. After several nights of staying "late at the office" she thought I was having an affair. I finally had to cop to having the Ryedale. After she knew about it it was ok for me to bring it home. Then she started saying I was making too much noise running it in my home office all the time. So last month I built my penny processing center out in the garage. She still thinks I spend too much time playing with pennies, but at least the pennies, the machines, and me are all out of her way.. LOL. |

Ahhh...brings back memories. I remember my first day sorting pennies with my new Ryedale machine. What a thrill that was---and still is! My only advice: read the manual, and pace yourself.
My girlfriend likes that I have a Ryedale machine. She knows that when she's working late Friday and Saturday nights, I'm not out blowing my money on girls and booze like I used to do. Instead, I'm safe at home either sorting coins or posting on my coin forum. Plus, she likes collectibles, so coins naturally appeal to her. |

All this talk about NotABigDeal's new machine has got me wanting to hurry up and finish work so I can get home and sort a few of those customer wrapped boxes I picked up yesterday. I need my Ryedale fix!
I know, I know.. terrible that I have to work on a Saturday.. but it does fund a bad penny habit. |

| NotABigDeal.. have you started freeing up your pennies into buckets so you will be ready when the Big Red Machine arrives? If you crack them out now you will be able to feed it faster. Can't wait to hear the sorting report after the first day. |

Never even crossed my mind. Better do it tonight. Thanks for the heads up. I wish I had more to sort. Only $300. I cheated and sorted some by hand, couldn't help it. I was having the "no sort shakes". But, I do have orders placed for next week....I figure start slow with like 20 boxes per week, then crank it up from there. It will take a week or two to get things running nice and smooth, you know, get into the routine. I'll try to pick more up this week, but my job makes it hard sometimes. Work, that is what causes the most problems with going to the banks. I primarily use extended hour branches, and go on the Saturdays that I don't work. Well, off to that job....
Deal
p.s. When I first started posting here, $300 at one time was a huge amount of pennies to me. With the Ryedale, it is a small amount. It just shows how your outlook can change with something as simple as a machine. This will be great. |

| One other thing you can do is see if there are any bank branches close to where you work and grab a few boxes during your lunch hour. |

Only problem is that I work "in the field". I never know really where I will be. I do it sometimes, but those are just shots into the dark. My main buy banks know me so there is no problem getting them if the bank has them.

| Tomorrow I am loading up on pennies getting ready for when my Ryedale arrives. Sorted 1000 unsorted, bagged 4000 zincs, and rolled $60 nickels. I'll have to finish sorting 2000+ before I hit the banks. Won't take long, but I can just imagine how long it would take the Ryedale to sort them. |

I checked the tracking number....It's on a truck in the next city over, it will be here today! As HoardCopperByTheTon suggested, I cracked open the rolls last night. $100 CWR and $200 in Brinks boxes. If I can't get any more pennies today, I'll probably only sort some tonight so that I can use it tomorrow, as my next penny order is on Saturday. About how long would it take to run them all through? With a re-sort of course. Have a great day everyone.
