I know most of us sort pennies, nickels, and halves.
Why don't many people sort quarters and dimes for silver? Are the percentages too low?

I've begun sorting Dimes...seems that they yield silver on a pretty consistent basis. Usually 1-2 coins per box. As for quarters, I looked at the % that Country has posted on here and decided that it's probably not worth the time.
I actually like sorting Dimes better than Nickels because it's much faster with just a rim check. |

If I remember the statistics right, quarters have the lowest percentage of Ag in circulation and dimes have the second highest percentage after halves.
I think a good bit of members on here sort dimes from what I have read in previous posts. I'm sure all of us check our pocket change for some elusive Ag. |

Doesn't seem worth the effort to me to tie up my money to buy the boxes, bother the tellers, transport them and return them just for one or two silver dimes for however long it takes to edge check a box. Why not just stay with getting as many halves as you possibly can? It's more worthwhile. Copper, on the other hand, may or may not someday pay off... but in the meantime it's fun to put a collection together, and you at least have the meager payoff of triple the value finds of some wheaties in each box |

I sort both dimes and quarters every week. Just when I think I will give up on quarters, I find a silver one. It's interesting to see what's out there. I also save the AU Island quarters (Samoan Islands, Virgin Islands, etc). A member of this forum once theorized to me that the reason there were so few silver quarters is that they circulate heavily, unlike halfs, and they are big enough to recognize something different, unlike dimes. So all the silver has been largely pulled from the quarters. None the less, I would very much like to find more quarters, and a standing liberty with a good date would be much more pleasing to me than a mercury dime. |

Another good reason that silver quarters are harder to find is the State/Territories/National Parks Program. There types of people from kids to grandparents that are trying to collect all 50 states and look at their quarters more closely than other coins. If they see anything odd like silver they pull them out. Also people just tend to be curious of what state is on their quarters and what not. This weeds out the supply quickly.
Also the use of the Quarter in commerce like in vending machines and what not may not accept silver coins thus either pull in rolls or transactions leading to them being pulled out easier. Like how people get rid of Canadian coinage.
If you have the time, money, and ways to return quarters- sort them. But if you do not dont bother. The rolls tend to be short and can add up quickly- one roll had 2 pennies a nickel leading to a .68 cent loss for ONE roll- hence it would take a couple silver quarters to break even for a bad pick up! |

I do sort dimes as well as halves. In my experience, it is rare to get a skunk on dimes, I consistently see 1-2 dimes per box, 5-10 per $1000 bag. I can usually pick them up by sound when pouring coins out of a $1000 bag.
It does take time to get them, unwrap them, edge check them and return them. They count through the machines consistently faster than halves, so that is a wash. You are also a lot more likely to "drop in" on a bank and walk out with a box of dimes.
There are loaded dime boxes out there just like loaded half boxes. I once pulled 29 including several mercs out of $230 in an open bank box.
In the end, if you have difficulty getting halves, or get mired down in a string of skunks, a few boxes of dimes can usually provide the "shot" of silver needed to improve your silver outlook. |

I do BWR and CWR Dimes and CWR Quarters. Dimes yield pretty well, quarters don't but I've found my only two silvers recently so I'll continue. Plus, quarters and dimes are fast to do so I could conceivably go through several thousand dollars a day if I had the $$$/Time. |

For those who can return their coins unrolled, the counters SOMETIMES sort dimes as pennies. Depends of course on the counter, how well it's calibrated, etc etc... but that always seemed to me like a good reason not to sort dimes. $500 per box to maybe average one silver dime, and then get shorted by a few dimes on the return... to me, equals... not worth it. On the other hand, if you have banks where you can only return stuff rolled, dimes begin to look a little bit more enticing. |

I have read several posters here grumble about the occasional short roll, and yes some counters do put dimes in the penny column. But this is a hobby (or obcession). And I think one of the cheapest imaginable. So I consider the occasional short roll or the mis-count at the bank to be the low cost of the hobby/obcession. I have found some very interesting dimes; one from the 1880s and recently an 1854 "love-coin" dime. In the process, I burnt a little gas, and got shorted a time or two. Small price compared to almost any other hobby. And if I was to be shorted 1 quarter a week for the priveledge of finding a great barber or standing liberty quarter at the end of this year, that would be a most acceptable price. |
