I recently posted about thousands of improperly stored pennies. I am going to keep the wheats and coppers, but I am going to store them apart from my other wheats and coppers as many, many, many od these coins have verdigris.
I was going to start dumping them in a plastic gallon jug, formerly used for Tropicana OJ.
(1) Is this a good storage unit? (2) Where can I pick up those packs of desicant to control moisture?
Thanks.

I wouldn't use a jug that contained an acid (OJ) just in case some stays in. Also you have to make sure there isn't any PVC in it. I forget what recycling numbers are safe. I'd put them in ziploc bags than either put them in a box or in a wide-mouthed jug/tub. |

you can use silica gel packets from shoe boxes to suck up the moisture, just got to kohl's and look around on the ground in the shoe area or take them out of boxes because they're only need for when the shoes are being shipped by airplane. |

That would be funny to get caught leaving kohl's with a large number of silica packets.
Just think about the police log report that that situation, "man steals caught stealing silica packets and leaves shoes behind"...

LOL, I used to walk around the shoe department everytime I went in with the wife picking up discarded ones off of the floor. Managed to build up a decent supply of them over a year or so doing that. I believe there was someone selling them by bulk on ebay at one point and I know there are a few places online that sell them as well. |

If you have a swap shop at your local dump, or a good will recycle center. Go to these places and try to get any cat litter buckets or 5 gallon buckets. These are pretty good for storage in dry places since they are open at the top. They aren't very pricey i've seen some for $1 a bucket which is too much for me. But they are strong and last a while.
I'd do this over an OJ container. Though i may be directly you towards too large of a container at the moment. |

Go to the local Wally, in the paint department grab a white food grade 5 gallon bucket for under $3 USD, the lid will set you back another buck and change.
Drop by the bathroom fixture aisle, the one that has towel bars, space saver shelves, yada, yada, pick up a couple of hand fulls of silica gel packs per visit from the shelves and on the floor. Other departments also have the silica packs. Keep your eyes open, they're everywhere. The maintenance and sales associates will also glady help you find the dessicants. |
I spent all my money on motorbikes, wimmens and beer...the rest I just wasted. |

Welcome to Realcent, James! A five gallon bucket, when full of coppers (or even zincs for that matter), are several hundred pounds. I know from experience. If the storage is very long term, and you don't want to move it at all, this is fine, but it is very difficult to move even a few feet. |

Wow. Heavy. Approximately how many cents fit into a five gallon bucket?

Give or take, about $300, I think. All depends on how well you pack 'em. And using that amount... Full of zincs = about 165 pounds. Full of copper = about 200 pounds. |

The weight of the 5 gallon container is why I was opting for those sturdy gallon OJ containers. My family drinks enough, so supply is not a problem. |

Ammo cans.
They are durable, watertight (in most cases), and can be moved easily (has a comfortable handle and not too heavy when filled with copper)
The 50 cals are nice but I like the 30 cal cans for ease of handling.
I can find them for $3-4 dollars each as surplus, or if you needed a lot of them, you could buy these by the pallet from online government surplus sites. |

I use ammo cans for my CuNi and 2L plastic juice bottles for my copper from '82 - '96. For my .999 Ni and pre '81 Cu I roll them and put them in Nickel or Pennie boxes. It takes longer but I consider them the good stuff. |
