the theft of 50 boxes by a fellow member got me thinking about anti-theft devices. has anyone thought about hiding a gps transmitter in their cache? something like this?
this page talks about using gps to protect expensive items and links to a page that has some sort of $60 transmitter. unfortunately, i can not get that page to load.
LT, that might work, but perhaps more appropriate for silver or gold due to the cost. My best advice would be not to depend on storing your stash in just one place, split it up between several locations and keep mum about it. The relatives can have fun searching for them if an Andrew McGuire type accident befalls you You could even create an encrypted treasure map in place of a will.
I think it would be a good anti-theft mechanism for the first 24hours after the theft of sealed boxes occurred. But if you're talking about buckets of pennies or nickels it seems less practical, unless the crook decides to sit on your coins for a while.
If they don't return them for cash then i would say Lo-jacking your items would be worth the investment. If they return your coins before you can find them, it's just an additional money lost.
on a side note i wonder if the device you're talking about could fit in a magicians coin. That would be a nice touch. you could even return that coin and track it through your cell when it goes from FRB to local bank etc and buy it back.

I don't wish anyone to have to use something like this to prevent theft. BUT if someone had "money to burn" and was good with electronics that would be one cool idea. Sort of a more modern version of Where's George. That would really be neat to see where your coin was traveling.
