Hello :)
I started sorting coins a few month ago and read a lot here and on others site, i live in Canada and i hand-sort all my coins. I have no desire to buy a machine for now as i like to sort them. I've got all my coins from rolls until now (i'll get my first box of nickels monday) and bank have been reluctant to give me large amount of rolls. Many even don't give me any or charges me way too much for them, eating any profit i can make off them.
I'm looking for others Canadian who may have tips for me on how to get box or rolls, how to avoid to paid extra to get them and if they are any good (all already sorted by machine or not), i'm on a tight budget :(
I've got a few silver, nickels and cooper rolls already and i don't really like the idea of stacking Canadian coins in Canada, we never know and i don't want my coins to be taken away by government. So i need help from Canadian, what you do with your nickels/cooper/silver ? did you sell them on ebay and buy america coins instead ? how do you export them exactly and do you have any reference to the law that it prohibit/allow the exportation of coins in Canada ?
thanks for any help

Just curious, are you originally from Canada or are you an immigrant?
I don't think you have any issues of keeping mid size quantities of Canadian nickels or pennies. No one will have a reason or desire to come and take them from you unless things have gone VERY BAD. |

hi wolvesdad,
yeah sadly i'm originally from Canada. still live there
if thing goes very bad as you say (war, ...) the government can take anything they want with a NOBOSTANT (don't know the english traduction of that word), it's a special but temporary law that government can vote, giving them self the right to go against the Canadian Charter of Liberty and violate any human right they want without the need to justify or explain to anyone.
As i read more and more on the subject i start to thing that the facts to collect coins (even without they metal content value) is illegal in Canada. Even posting (Canada Post) any kind of bullion (gold, silver, copper, aluminium, ...) seem to be against the law. I do not have all reference to where i found it and i'm still digging on the subject, i will post more on the subject as i find it.
I don't really expect any thing to goes very good or bad, i just thing it's important to know what legally allowed and what's not. |

an important thing is to be very quiet about your keeping of the coin.
There is not any need for ANYONE to know you have kept copper or nickel coins.
You are just keeping back a few older coins for good memory and coin collecting. That is all, and that is innocent and harmless!
Relax and enjoy! |

Welcome to the forum didou. For your question about getting coins from banks, your chances are better the more you ask at. If you are asked to pay a fee per roll, you always have the option of refusing and going elsewhere. If there is one (or more) major bank you have an account with, their branches are a good place to start. Banks in shopping malls seem to stock a lot of coins as well.
As far as the govt taking away our coins, I truly believe it's not even on their radar. Recent events have shown that much paranoia may be justified, but I think the attention is more on discrediting and scattering overt opposition. Stay away from safety deposit boxes, do any PM deals in cash and you should be fine. Selling copper or nickel coins to someone who intends to melt them would also be a very risky and illegal move. |

I've NEVER paid for rolls in any Canadian bank and I've bought from all of them. At RBC just march up to the business teller and ask to buy a box of pennies and a box of nickels like it is the most normal thing in the world. At CIBC the individual tellers each maintain a stock of coins and are very happy to unload their extras. Act like you do this all the time, hand over the right number of bills and you should be fine. Also, try asking for several boxes and often watch them apologize for only being able to give you some of what you need. NEVER pay above face for coin - you are doing them a favor by taking all that extra coin off their hands. That said some branches are net importers of coin and others are net exporters of coin. Ask about their coin flow and target branches that have to ship out coin - you make more friends that way. |

I have also never paid for rolls here in Canada. In the major cities it is pretty easy to hit up a few banks. I started by asking for a bundle of nickles ($20) then I got up the courage to ask for a box and havent looked back since. I had one RBC bank employee give me a hard time for going to the business teller because I do not have a business account. That bank is now my dump bank. The six other RBC branches I go to dont seem to mind at all. |

thanks for all the answer, you are very helpful
Actually the bank that ask me to pay for roll is 'Banque de Montréal', 20 cents a roll doesn't matter if it's penny or quarters, i try talk to the tellers but they are firm, they don't seem to know what a box of coins is and they won't let me order one. RBC is my bank i used since a while before i start sorting a lot so i make it my dump bank, they accept all coins i bring them without a word. I'm still waiting from my nickels box i order 2 weeks ago at CIBC, they didn't tell me how the charges will be (but there will be some) for the box or call me back even i go there to ask twice since, CIBC give me a few roll each week but that far from enough, usually $50-$100 FV or less sometime there is new useless roll. Caisse Populaire Desjardins usually refuse to give me any coins at all (even if i'm willing to pay more than face value) except one tellers who is friendly to me and give me a very small amount, only few roll. BNC (Banque Nationale du Canada) teller are very unpleasant and i didn't find one teller who would cooperate there, i already closed the account.
I don't live near a major city and i very rarely goes there, i live in a small town (30K-), i am really alone in my area and i have to ask twice every new teller i see because they look at me like i was a alien ;) Each bank only have a few tellers (2-3) and it's always the same people.
I try to talk to everyone i know about it if they have a relative who work at a bank who can help but i've got no luck from that yet.

Welcome aboard,Didou!
Your command of English is way better than mine is of French - what is spoken in France. As for Quebecois,I don't speak a word of it.
I wouldn't be too surprised if you found Newfoundland 1 Cent coins dated 1938-47 in a lot of Canadian 1 Cent coins,as they are the same size.
Newfoundland 1 Cent coins are worth hanging onto,as the Newfoundland coin series is a pretty scarce one.

Didou,
I found the small town banks had much better percentages than the bigger cities. I only hit up three small town banks but they were all pretty good |
