I was on the road for a while this afternoon driving down to KY for the weekend and I got to thinking about NDFarmer's million pennies. What if someone loaded bags of pennies inside the wall of the "safe room" of their house (where they and their family would go if there were intruders--except for you firing when ready, Deal) to not only hide the pennies, but also to act as a bulletproof shield to make such a room a bona fide safe room? Bags of pennies would probably have the same sort of shock-absorbing tendencies as sandbags or other similar backstops at firing ranges--because of the random order and density of the pennies, they'd stop probably most projectiles. Just a random thought, for those of you with a lot of coppers.
my science teacher glued a bunch together in a a neat pattern. I think the design was about 5/6th of an inch in thickness. He was pretty confident it could stop a typical rifle bullet.
I would be willing to bet a $50 dollar bag of pennies would stop a bullet if hit in the thickest point...though i wouldn't stand on the other end to prove my theory.
