Coins from ancient times are indeed interesting objects to study, especially if one is interested in the history of inflation and its effects on life (coin clipping, coin debasing, etc.)
The subject of counterfieting was no stranger to the ancient world. Sometimes making fake coins was done by other nations with the intent to either hurt another nation's trade or economy, or to have similar coins to use in trade for their own merchants.
For example, suppose some nation near but not part of the Roman empire wanted some Roman silver coins for trade. They could either trade some of their goods for roman coins, or, if they had skilled craftsmen, they could make good copies of Roman coins for themselves to use. Since ancient coins were crude by todays standards it was easy to produce copies, and as mentioned in the above stories, sometimes nation's made copies of what they knew were acceptable coins to the rest of the world.
