I was on the way to the post office yesterday and it was about 5 minutes till the bank closed so I decided I should stop in and see if I could get some more pennies.. a guy can never have too many pennies. I go in teller says she has $5 worth I can have. She also has a bunch of Suzy B, Sacs, Pres Dollars and $2 bills she would like to get rid of. Being the nice guy that I am I buy all of it from her so she can get rid of all that oddball money and make it easier for her to count her drawer at the end of the day. She tells me I may want to check with the teller next to her because she thinks he may have some coins he wants to get rid of too. So I step over to his line and ask him if he has any pennies or shiny quarters. He has $10 worth of customer wrapped coins and a bunch of those modern dollars, some $2 bills, buy no shiny quarters. Then, remembering Frugi's story about his bag of half dollars I ask if he has any half dollars. He tells me "This might be your lucky day. I have $60 worth. Some little old lady brought these in after her husband passed away. I think they might be worth something someday." Then he opens up a roll and shows me.. looks like there are a lot of Franklins on one end of the roll. Then he asks me how many of them I would like. I'll let you guys guess the answer to that.
I go out to the car and I can't wait to open them and check them out. I open the first roll: 1 Walker, 5 Franklins, 1 40% Kennedy and 13 clad.
The second roll is one of those I call a shotgun roll.. a $20 roll. It gets even better: 7 Walkers, 15 Franklins, 6 90% Kennedys, 3 40% Kennedys and the rest clad.
Roll #3 gets even better: 3 Walkers, 12 Franklins, 1 90% Kennedy, 4 40% Kennedys
Roll #4 gets even better than that.. as if that's possible 2 Walkers, 9 Franklins, 8 90% Kennedys, 2 40% Kennedys That's right.. 21 coins.. all silver!
The last roll slipped a little bit.. 8 of them were only 40% and there was a foreign coin in there.. a 1955 British Half Crown. It certainly looks like it has some silver in it and I am happy with it for 50 cents. I will have to post it Cerulean's whatsit section to get an answer on the true composition. 1 Walker, 5 Franklins, 5 90% Kennedys, 8 40% Kennedys, 1 British Half Crown.
Totals: 14 Walkers, 46 Franklins, 22 90% Kennedys, 16 40% Kennedys, 22 Clads and 1 silver Half Crown.
This certainly made this a very Merry Christmas for me!
I was so excited about getting the half dollars I failed to ask if the lady turned in any quarters or dimes. You can bet I will be back there when they open Monday morning to check on that.
So it is certainly worthwhile to ask about Half Dollars when you are out trying to get pennies. Tis the season! I would love to see more stories from members like mine and Frugi's.

Definite bragging rights there. I'm going to the bank tomorrow to turn in some zincs, maybe a bit of your luck will rub off on me.

Amazing, HCBTT! The Silver Santa brought you some great gifts this year. I can't imagine what a rush that must have been finding all that silver! Congratulations! |

A great Christmas gift Horde Copper By The Ton.
Did you check for any semi-valuable dates or error coins among the clad halves?

It was all that common date stuff you always get when you get half dollars A lot of the clad and 40% halves were BU though.
I still have to go back and check several of the dates for double dies.
I went back to the bank today to make sure that lady didn't deposit anything else I forgot to ask for. No pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, silver dollars, 2 cent pieces, 3 cent pieces, 20 cent pieces or old paper money.. just the half dollars. I can sleep easy now. |

Cool finds, HCBTT. The 1955 Half Crown is cupro-nickel. British circulating coins were minted in silver through 1946.
It's worth 1/8 of a Pound. |

That is a great haul HCBT! Congrats.
I picked up a 3/4 bag of halves at a bank last Saturday, only 8 40% and two 1peso coins fron the phillipines. They were a little smaller than the halves. One looks silver but have to do some research.
Got two bags of coin counter halves on order from another bank, will pick them up tonight or tomorrow. |

Thanks for the info El Dee. I guess even with the weak dollar it is not quite 50 cents yet.. but I am happy with it at that price.
Yeah Dan, I thought of you and your half dollar searches when I got these. Picked up $50 in halves today and got skunked. Ah, back to reality. They have $200 more in halves that I have to pick up by Friday, though after today's sample I am not getting my hopes of another visit from the Silver Santa up. I do hope to hear a story about the Silver Santa visiting you when you get those other 2 bags of halves. |

HCBTT...I'm your biggest fan. Thats a score what IS a score!!
And as a beginner, your story moved me to action. Today I went to all the banks in my town looking for Halves. I basically struck out, even encountering a real witch at one branch (see my post under the fees topic).
However at one bank there was this extremely friendly young lady, who had 2 halves. I took them even though they were just late Kennedy's. She said "We're always glad to get rid of halves, they're just annoying." So I asked if any other tellers had any more. She said "No, but just the other day, this Old Lady came in with a Whole Bunch of ROLLS of halves. We didn't know what to do with them so we just sent them in." I couldn't believe it! All I could think about was HCBTT's Christmas Story. It was killing me.
So I asked if she would be so kind as to call me if anymore came in. And she said she would gladly do it if she could remember, so I left my number also mentioning I was looking for any other old coins, pennies, etc. A day late, and several half dollars short.......maybe next time.

Well this is what happened. Picked up my order last night.
Turned out to be 1 bag of halves $497.50 and 3 bags of cents, all from thier main branch's coin counter.
When I got home I opened the halves to confirm the count. There was $496 in halves AND 5 quarters, 1 dime & 1 nickel so I was shorted ten cents. It seems very strange that $1.50 in halves was missing and $1.40 in change was in there. I am pretty sure someone took a peek and pulled out 3 halves and tossed in the change to pay for it. The bag was sealed with string and a tag but I could untie the string and the crimplock was not tight. The bag also had a 1970's one peso (mexico) and a brass token for a batting cage machine about 10 miles away. They are both the size of a half. So I figuere I didn't lose anything.
Now what did I find????? 1 - 1944 walking liberty half 6 - 90% JFK 24 - 40% JFK
I will open the ¢¢¢ this weekend. Hope it is full of wheats and indians. |

Wow, that's great to hear that the Silver Santa visited you too, Dan!
Sorry to hear about your timing being off Miser-stro.. would have loved to hear a Silver Santa story from you too. Timing is everything. Three other guys from my local coin club bank at that branch and they could have just as easily gotten those halves or they could have been shipped. I almost didn't stop at that branch that day. Here is a long shot you may try to recapture those halves the old lady deposited. Ask the nice lady at your bank if you can order a box of halves. Maybe they will ship you out a box from the central vault that includes those rolls you missed.
I am picking up another $200 in halves at one of my other banks this afternoon.. maybe I will have a follow-up story. |

Hey! Thats a good idea HCBTT! How many halves does a Box consist of? Will it put me out 1000 bucks? I'm on a very limited budget right now. Thanks again for the tip!

A box of halves is only $500. And you get your money back really fast. All you have to do is sort them. $500 in halves sort much faster than $500 in pennies. Then you either have to find a bank that won't frown on you depositing them or you just use them to buy gas, groceries, etc. until you get them all back into circulation.
I am going to go pick up those $200 in halves during lunch and I will sort them in the car.. then take them over to my other bank to either trade for 8 boxes of pennies or deposit. My money will only be tied up for half an hour. |

| Well, so much for that idea. I don't have 5 bills right now. My main work computer that I use for all of my design work just crashed in a large way a couple weeks ago, and I'm saving money for a new one. On second thought... I SHOULD order a box, actually 3 boxes of halves before I buy my new computer, sort them, and pay for the computer in halves!! |

| Yep, pay for it in halves.. they might not like it much if you pay for it in pennies. You aren't actually spending the money, you are borrowing it from yourself for a few hours. |
