OK, here is the deal. I have been in the process of acquiring PM and I have most of it in a safe in my house. It’s not the smallest or biggest safe but it keeps the kids out. It is bolted down and would be pretty hard to beat open. My question for you, my fine forum friends; what is the best way to posses my PM and still be safe

| If you use a safe then at least hide it. If your kids know where it is then it isn't hidden. "Hey, you want to see my dad's safe?" |

You are on the right track. Consider concealing the safe somehow so that a home invader might ignore it (imagine if the bad guys see the safe and order you to open it). Depending on the room and size of the safe here are some ideas that might work.
Fit cardboard boxes over it. You might need to cut and reinforce the boxes. Label the boxes "Xmas Decorations" or "Auntie'd Old Clothes" or something else not worth digging through.
Create a built in wooden bench with a lid that lifts and a front that swings open
Get two tall bookcases with a base all the way around, screw wheels under it, and roll them in front of the safe. Pretend the safe is a void space in the corner.
Throw a nice blanket or cloth over the safe and treat it like a (heavy) coffee table

| 4 feet down is fine IF you are not adding to the hoard regularly. If you do want to dig that deep get a post hole auger. Digging that deep with a shovel is going to get noticed. Prepping for that new deck is a good cover. Also be sure SOMEONE else knows where the stash is. God forbid you die and no one in your family knows to go looking. Your family might need your PMs. |

I've been in the alarm business for 35 years as I started my business in 1975. Put some decoys in the safe and put the goods in an unlikely place. I think burial is safe but too inconvenient. Most homes have many hidden spaces. Be creative. It's only drywall. An old attic trunk under musty clothing would be better than a safe. Look at your home with new eyes and create a space.
BTW, an alarm is a layer of protection but will never stop someone who knows you have PM's.
Kids and friends can cause a loss, keep information close to the vest.

| So do you guys tell anyone where you bury your treasure? What would happen if you were in a coma or died and your family didn't know where you buried it? |

Hummm, great tips. I will not be digging. I live in a place that does not have basements because if I dig more than a foot or so I get water. I am only 60 ft above sea level. I like the idea of the safe as decoy. It's only drywall - I know of some dead space . . . More suggestions are welcome. Thanks Again! |

| There are plenty of hiding places you can use or make in the attic. I have never heard of anyone's attic getting anything stolen from it. It is too much hassle and time consuming to look there if you are a thief. I know mine is a pain to get to sometimes, move the car in the garage, get the ladder... Maybe you can find a place there. I have a couple hiding places in my house, but I do keep a little in my safe. My hiding places are not easy to get to so I store it in the safe until I have enough worth moving. |

But think twice before you stash your penny/nickel hoard up there. Talk about having a weight over your head. |

Inside a safe that weighs at least a ton loaded, behind hundreds of boxes, behind interlocked shelving units loaded to the gills with thousands of cans of food, behind boxes of worthless crap, inside a padlocked and deadbolted storage unit that is camera-surveillance monitored 24 hrs a day with a password enabled entry required. That's one spot of many |

| What about encryption, at least for telling others where the stash is so it doesn't get lost. You could have instructions on where to find your stash in a safe deposit box. And give a code word or phrase to another person, or few people, with uncoded instructions in the box telling who to contact for the codeword. Encryption can be nearly unbreakable. |

Put a fake gutter downspout on the front of your house, and fill it full of your hoard. You could reinforce it and securely attach it to the house, while giving it the appearance of being old and weak.
This would work especially well if you live on a well-lit street where neighbors regularly walk day and night. Someone grabbing at your gutter is going to get immediate attention, not to mention the bulkiness of it. |

Bad idea. Someone could take the downspout for scrap and then you'd lose your PM. |

Around here they are stealing downspouts! Now I will say that it's really just the copper ones but alot of the old ones were copper.
How about mold the PMs into the shape of a safe and never lock it.

| Well obviously it shouldn't be made out of copper. If you're going to do that, you might as well make the downspout out of gold and personally hand it over to the thief. |
