"But now comes word that it isn’t just wildlife that can go extinct. The element gallium is in very short supply and the world may well run out of it in just a few years. Indium is threatened too, says Armin Reller, a materials chemist at Germany’s University of Augsburg. He estimates that our planet’s stock of indium will last no more than another decade. All the hafnium will be gone by 2017 also, and another twenty years will see the extinction of zinc. Even copper is an endangered item, since worldwide demand for it is likely to exceed available supplies by the end of the present century."
This article seems to imply that zinc could someday surpass copper in value. Although I've often heard that copper could be gone during this century, the assertion that zinc could be gone with in a generation comes as a surprise. Does anybody have information that supports (or disproves) what this article is saying?

First, you must take the source into consideration. Robert Silverberg is a GREAT Sci-Fi writer. Even co-wrote some with Issac Asimov one of the Greatest Sci-Fi writers of all time. So, is Mr. Silverberg a good source?? Well, one of the things he does best is take today's world activities and project it into the future in a way that captures your attention and makes an impact on your brain. He has done the same in this article. Will it happen the way he says?
I havn't seen any stats on how well Silverberg has predicted the future but, I have seen some on Asimov and I think his batting average is one I would bet on if he were still alive. Best I can tell you is read his books and make your own decisions if he is a good source or do as Kiwiman says because like real estate, they aint making any more of it than the world's got.
And just for the record, Silverberg is one of my favs.
