One of the banks that accepts payment in shells, pig tusks, and similar forms of currency is the Tari Bunia Bank. That's all very interesting, but that name...Tari Bunia....I know I've heard it somewhere before......I remember now! Earlier this year I read an article that announced that Countrywide Financial was buying this little bank. I don't remember in what newspaper I read it, except that it was buried deep in the backpages of some financial newspaper written in German, and I wasn't doing a very good job of translating it. Unfortunately, all I can find on the internet is this lone article: You must be logged in to see this link.

I won't even attempt to connect all the dots, except to say that the world of banking can be an interesting place sometimes.

And if you're interested, here's website about shell money in the Solomon Islands: You must be logged in to see this link.

And from a numismatic perspective, the January 2008 issue of Worldwide Coins has a short feature on conch shell money.
