So I took the plunge and hauled home $30 of rolls. For now, I'm hand sorting and find about 1% Canadian and a little better than that for wheaties.
A strange wreath design appeared on one and I thought it was a oddball Canadian, but lo and behold, it's an Indian Head! The last time I found one in the wild was back in the 70's.
Anyway, what's the consensus for storing coppers - re-roll, or just store loose in containers?

Congrats on finding an Indian! There are plenty of guys here who sort a lot and have not found one yet. I sort more than my fair share and I have only found 3 so far.
For storage it is really a matter of personal preference. They store better in less space and are easy to count if you reroll them.. but it does take time to reroll them.. especially if you don't happen to have an automatic rolling machine or two laying around. If you do reroll them make sure you clearly mark them as copper so you don't accidently deposit them with your zinc. Those of us that do large volumes tend to store them loose by the bag. Kitty litter boxes also work great for bulk storage. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I feel the sickness coming on.
It started when I was away from the office for part of the day, on the way back passed about 4 banks and stopped at each one. One large one sent me to the "business tellers" where I spied a $25 box. I thought, a few of those, a Ryedale, a new account at a second large bank with a gazillion branches... |

| I don't see any point in re-rolling the copper cents (in large amounts) at this point. |

I think you have caught on. I am up to 5 (I think) different banks that I belong to. Two new banks are opening near me soon. Just may pop in when they open. I wonder which one wants my business the most. I do need a new toaster . |

Maybe those new banks will want your business so much they will order a bunch of pennies for you every week. Love those new account incentives. I have gotten a shiny toaster, a blanket, a teddy bear and stuffed plush pony this year. |

Wells Fargo pony?
Tried for the stuffed bear at Bank of the West (they had them everywhere) but the offer was over. (thought they would want to get rid of them) |

| They will bring the bear back. They offer it periodically. I got a huge one and a small one from Bank of the West.. also got the toaster from them. Yep, the pony is from Wells Fargo. I told them next year they should offer a stage coach. The blanket was from Union Bank.. only $1 to open an account. |

I reroll my coppers by date. After I get 50 rolls of a decade, put them in a penny box. I find it makes it very easy to keep inventory of what I have. Also, when rerolled, you save a lot of space (if you are a big-league sorter). |

I gotta ask, how long does it take you to sort? Seems very time consuming. Don't get me wrong, to each his own or whatever, just wondering exactly HOW you do it? Sort Cu from Zn then resort your Cu's? Once again, I'm not downing your method. We all share the same sickness in one way or another.
Deal
p.s. Do you have any machines, or is it all by hand? |

For me to hand sort a box, it would take a little under an hour (52 minutes). After I separate zinc from coppers, I rerolls the zincs and mark them to be returned to the bank. As for the loose coppers, I throw them in my 'copper' tub for resortment by date and to double check that I pulled all coppers. As for sorting by date, I only sort for about an hour, or until I am able to get $5.00 in rolls. If I am close to completing a box for a date, I may separate a certain decade and search from there.
I try not to spend too much time on sorting by date, so I can sort the unsorted tub. The goal obviously is to get copper; date assortment is secondary.
For know I do all the sorting by hand. I am holding off on getting a ryedale until I sort enough per week to make it a wise investment and until I get a box of zinc 82's. After I get a ryedale, I can spend more time on sorting by date. |
