According to John Ulzheimer, president of Consumer Education at Credit.com, charge cards are an excellent way to avoid falling into debt, but they aren't a great strategy for building strong credit and credit scores.
Ok....how can charge cards be an excellent way to avoid falling into debt? Oxymoron anyone? or just plain MORON!!!!! |

It's a charge card. You place money onto it, and are only allowed to spend that money you place on it. It's like having a prepaid credit card that counts as a normal credit card. |

Then it is STILL a "credit" card, it's just you loaning to THEM till you spend it.
When there is no "money" in the system, and the entire monetary structure is based on IOUs and Debt Instruments, how can you EVER "avoid" falling into debt? Even if your "rich" in money you are still SWIMMING in DEBT!
I thought AMEX was hard to get and didn't need to scrape the bottom of the 20 something pre paid card barrel. |

Smart marketing. You deposit your money with me. I pool it with the all the other "sheepl". I will only charge you a small fee to handle your money and you can build credit. AM Ex will take this pool and reinvest the proceeeds into high return investments. They will ingrain the Am Ex name into these kids mindset and build a future customer base for when these college kids become debt driven consumers. Some parents may even like the idea that their children can only spend what is on their cards. Am Ex will track purchases and sell the data to marketers who may wish to find new consumers to bleed.

Ahh, you folks are confusing pre-paid credit cards with charge cards. There is no deposited money, there is no revolving credit where one carry's a balance.
With a charge card you can charge what ever you want. But you have to pay it back in full every month. New members usually get a spending (not credit) limit. Individuals who establish themselves eventually get that limit removed.
It is nothing but a short term (30 day) loan. The company usually charges a small annual fee for the service. There is no interest. Obviously you don't charge more than you can pay back in 30 days.
