“The reasonable man adapts himself to the world; the unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man.” – George Bernard Shaw. Why Copper Bullion ~~~ Interview with Silver Bullion Producer Market Harmony Passive Income blog
the only reason they have not been discontinued is because people will cry inflation if they were eliminated - too easy for merchants to round up.
another year or two of inflation and people won't care any more.
once they eliminate nickels, a 20 cent piece makes more sense than a quarter.
1 and 5 dollar bills were replaced by coins in many countries a long time ago, so that is something else on the horizon. eliminating the penny and nickel makes room in tills for those coins.

Really it makes sense to completely redo the entire cash system we use.
Killing the cent, nickel, and half dollar and paper dollar and replacing them with Two and Five Dollar Coins and a $500 bill would really modernize the monies.
I am not a liar (politician) so don't expect to ever see my ideas turn to reality.
Silver Monometalism is the most permanent and stable form of money the world has seen. Natural law and history prove silver value is best multiplied by gold and best divided by copper. It is only in this counterfeit currency time when the natural law appears suspended.
very seldom do people (other than me, and probably all the other RealCent members)bother to pick up a penny off the ground. I have had several merchants ask me if I want my pennies, when returning my change. The penny has already ceased to be currency when people don't bother to pick them up. And leave them in trays at the counter for anyone to take. Eliminating this coin is just a formality. But the cost of producing pennies is such a pittance to the trillions being printed, and the 10's of trillions in endemnification obligations the US has committed to ---- the savings of a few 100 million dollars a year isn't worth the political hassle. So pennies, and nickles, will continue to be minted until no one cares at all --- but probably out of steel or aluminum. All they will have to do is put a little sticker on the vending machines that say "doesn't accept new nickles".
