Maybe he could set up a franchise operation like McDonalds or Subway and sell franchises; we can have operations all over America running the same way :-) haha

Money can make anything happen. I don't know of personal practices and I am no longer term member of the board, but...

If one has several thousand dollars to invest in the development of a scaled up ryedale and the money to invest in a secured facility than they could begin to look at he margins. What does it cost me to get the pennies what does it cost me to sort and store them. Is there a big enough market for me to sell them and other such concerns. They had the capital and a good business plan. Many people here if they had 50k or better to risk would in there research to start such a business would find a way also. It takes guts to put the money and time in to something that only a few nerds like us understand that is a sound investment. If the ban is ever lifted and the price of copper goes up even more than there will be companies that have even more money behind them that will make operations that even make protland look small.

The beauty of this hobby is that we can all play at whatever level we feel comfortable.. be that a hand sorter just eyeballing a roll or two.. up to industrial level operations like the Portland Mint.. and anywhere in between. What you put into capital equipment is largely dependant on what volume level you are going to play at and effeciencies derived by that investment. There are machines that will sort faster than a Ryedale.. but they cost a lot more. You have to do some serious volume to justify adding such machines to your lineup.

If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Now selling Copper pennies. 1.6x plus shipping. Limited amounts available.
