Not to mention that on ebay those 5 for $3 are for brilliant uncirculated ones that have never been touched by human hands. IHC's on the other hand are not uncirculated and worth a bit more than these uncirc proofs. |

I've found two penny proofs--a 1969 and a 1982. Just had a thought, were the proofs in 1982, being a transition year, copper or zinc??? |

When you see one you will know...they just really stand out. Also after 1974, the proofs are the only cents with an "S" mintmark. If you get to a coin shop or coin show, you can look at the proof sets to get a better feel. |

To tack on to what ZigMeister said, they also (usually) have a much higher relief and the "flat" parts of the coin are quite mirrorish. They really do stand out. |

I've found 1, but I don't remember what year it is now. |
Are you throwing that out? |

I found a 2009 Lincoln sitting on a log copper proof. I was pretty surprised to find one. |

Here's an old mishandled 1961 proof that I found today in a $100 lot I bought from JobIII. Notice the raised double struck rim and the sharp Lincoln bust details. The scan may not show the proof surfaces, but there is still some there.
