Okay, so I was sorting pennies and for some reason this 1970 D caught my attention (not for what I later found), so I took a closer look through my loupe and found:
what appears to be a repunched mint mark, the D, but hiding behind the 7.
That is right, on the lower right of the 7's stem you can see a half moon that looks like the D of the mint mark, but as if it had been punched, the the date punched over it, then the D punched again in the correct location.
Otherwise it could be a die flake(a piece of metal came off) or a cud of some sort.
Or I just need to get my eyes checked.
If it was really a variety(unto now undocumented) of a repunched mint mark with the first one under/behind the 7, would it be worth anything? A lot? I need a better loupe....
And for those that will ask, my photography skills are lucky to just show regular design features, this is so small that there is now way I could get anything close to a good pic.
So, sorry, no pics.

TJCFund, no, I left your boxes sealed. I don't sort sorted copper. Maybe I will one day when copper has runout and I have time on my hands.
But I do do quick sorts since I hand sort. Never know what you will find.
The thing is, this 'variety' is not visible with the naked eye and the usual hand sorting distance from the eye. It was just luck I guess that I wanted to take a closer look. |

If you were able to take adecent picture then I would tell you to post it on lincolncentresources.com. There they have professional licoln cent error experts from all kinds of sources like coppercoins.com and coneca.com that post on that site. Without a good picture then you may never know about this coin unless you take it to a coin show and show it off. Even then you may run into a douchebag that tells you it is nothing just because he is tired of all the questions and is ready to go home. |

Most likely a die crack/chip, a cud would be on the rim only. With the minting process it is impossible to have a mintmark in the location of date. |

impossible you say? I mean, it is less than a few millimeters from where the mintmark is supposed to go, you are saying a mint worker couldn't have 'missed the mark' a bit and first stamped it into the die over or under the date position, then corrected it with a correct stamped location? |
