At my pickup today I got a box of 2010-D Shield pennies. I think it's a brink box. Man they all look nice and clean and shiney. I mean I like them and all...just was looking for a fun box to sort through and this is all I got :(

Sell the box on ebay and have more money for "fun" boxes.

I got a box like that last week, but turned it back in for another box. There may have been errors to search for, but with limited time, I opted for a "used" box.

My son (age 8) and I get rolls of pennies from the bank and sort together. He keeps all the wheats, foreign coins, and anything interesting. He gets a few copper rolls, and I save the rest.

Its a good way to get him interested in a hobby, to discuss money, history, and life.

Maybe, one day, the copper stuff will be worth more. But for now, the time together is priceless.

I return my coins at Coinstar. Yes, there's a small price to pay but don't want to upset the bank. Funny, just as I was leaving it said check the return slot for rejected coins. I heard a "plunk" and low and behold out pops a 1964 dime. I didn't put it in (I only had pennies) but it came from somewhere! Glad to get it. Gave it to son too.

I got another 3 boxes today! (makes 7 total so far) I asked for one box and noticed they were shields, so I asked if they had anymore and they let me have two more boxes. Good thing I have a business account or I wouldn't have gotten them. I'm kinda happy about it!

Welcome, TWOHORSES!!! I just love my time with my two girls (age 6 and 5), and they both have some interest in coins. Sarah collects Canadian, and Ruthie has kid of started looking at Mexican stuff. Until recently, she was more into "shiny" US pennies. But I think there were just too many of the same thing for her. So now it's Mexico. And Daddy has to find that in the dealer junk boxes. :)

Is there any particular foreign coinage that has struck your son as interesting?

The only foreign coins that we have found were (1) 10-20 Canadian cents; (2) 1 Panama cent. He and I have found approx 30 wheat cents. My grandmother (his great-grandmother) saved silver coins in 1964 when they changed to clad. So, I guess our looking for and saving copper pennies is genetic.

Its a little different, but I find looking through rolls of coins to be relaxing and interesting. He seems to like it too, and we often each unroll a roll at the same time to see who can find the most copper/wheats/foreign coins, like a contest.

Perhaps your girls will remain interested over time. For my son, we talk about what was happening during the time that the cents were made - e.g. 1970 Vietnam; 1944 WWII; 1976 Bicentennial; etc. Its a little history lesson in there.

I have a similar story. My son is 6 and enjoys unrolling the coins and loading the sorter machine. Its not a Ryedale and is home made but works for us for now. He is hung up on the new shield pennies and has 6 rolls already.

The other day the wife and kid and I sat around the table and rolled up the coppers. It was two hours of priceless family time.
