ummm.... I'm not the DDO/DDR expert at all, but I've seen this 'doubling' before, and it isn't. As far as I know, what you see doesn't have anything to do with hub doubling, but with the coin sorter/roller machine pushing the metal in on one side of the letters as it spins the coin.
Something like this.
Please correct me if I am mistaken on this though. Anyone know this cause/error better? |

The fact that the 'doubling' doesn't go all the way up and down on the left side. The angle of the 'doubling' is not oriented correctly, it is like an 85 degree angle while the lettering is 90 degree with the edge of the coin. The fact that when I've seen this 'doubling' before it usually or sometimes didnt show on the inside area of the letters, ie inside an R or A or D. I see on your example it does affect some of the inside of the A, R, etc.... but shouldn't it also effect the bottom inside of the right 'leg' of the R??
Moreover, from seeing this 'doubling' in the past, on coins with no known DDx, my amateur opinion is that that are caused by something after they leave the mint.
Hope this helps.
Again, if someone knows with certainty or has more knowledge of it, please chime in!! |

machine doubling is much more common than a true doubled die. a big difference is that the "extra stuff" caused by machine doubling is not as raised as the "main" lettering or image.
that other one might be a repunched mint mark though. |

Oh, and thank you for the advise so far wolvesdad. I appreciate it and the more I look into it, I am tending to agree. A HUGE spread on machine doubling or a double strike, not a true, honest, hub die.
The RPM would be nice though, especially with a population so far of two. Three is good for me!
Halves are pretty cool, even with no silver. I'm learning and getting some good experience and building eye strength at the least!
uthminsta is there any premium to em? |

I belive most 74 DD have doubling mainly in the letters of trust
Kennedy halves pre 75 have "fatter" letters than the new ones. I think it just looks different than what you are uysed to seeing. I'm not an expert an errors but I think its not a DD.

Highroller, that is the DDO the double die obverse. Yes that is the most common. Kurr is shooting for the ultra elusive DDR(reverse).
Kurr.... what I am seeing is not mint machine doubling as uthminsta has indicated,
What I see is damage done by some type of coin processing (ie rolling) machine. If you notice from the link provided, machine doubling results in the entire letter being doubled. And probably from two different sides/angles. Your coin example is limited to one side and only half of that side, and at the 'odd' angle as previously mentioned.
On a side note, I have an extra 1974 D DDO if you would like to own an example. I would trade it for a 1/10 gold eagle... ;P~ well, that would be nice, but actually I could trade it far more reasonably than that if you did really want one. |
