Anyone search dimes? Don't see much discussion about it, so assume it's not worth the effort, but don't know why.

I'm new to this board also so I'm def. not the most qualified to answer your question, but I know that a bunch of people here do search dimes. I've searched only 1 box and found 1 silver coin. |

I search dimes every week. I get customer rolled dimes (and quarters) from banks, and an occasional box from the bank. The rolls in clear plastic are pretty easy to search, and BOA will take back the unbroken plastic rolled dimes (at a different branch than I picked them up). I find 1 to 5 dimes per box, and an occasional dime in the customer rolled coins. I found a very worn dime from the 1870s in a customer rolled coin roll a couple months ago. I have gotten a couple of mercury dimes over the past year. The dimes don't add up much, but they sooth my depression over finding so few silver halfs. Dimes are more dependable, if less rewarding. I also search quarters, with very little reward, but an occasion lucky strike on quarters keeps me looking. |

I search for silver dimes in my local coin shop. Usually find a good amount of mercury and roosevelts and never leave the shop depressed because if I can't find dimes there are always quarters. I gave up searching bank rolls for silver as it was to time consuming. Prior to finding two almost unlimited penny source banks it helped fill the void, now I dont have enough time to sort all the pennies I have been getting. Time to call Andy. Sort and sell copper and use the proceeds to build the silver stash. |

Interesting. I was exclusively sorting pennies. Then I tried a nickel box and had good enough results, I decided to try another. Same good results. Total 5 WN, a Buffalo, and about 40 pre 60's. So I ordered dimes and halves.
The dimes are in the clear rolls and just looking at the edges through the plastic, it appears to be a skunk box. Don't really want to open all those dimes. Could be a silver hiding in there, I guess.
The halves haven't come in yet. Had to order $2k worth for the order to be placed. Should be in next Tuesday. From what I'm hearing, my expectations are low. Gonna give this one order a try and go back to pennies if the results aren't satisfying. Don't want to really upset me to the point of seeing yellow off my source bank with all this futile ordering. |

Dimes are a lot of work, I still enjoy searching through them.
This week, I found only 2 silver dimes out of two boxes (5000 dimes). My percentages are typically 1 silver dime out of 1000 to 3000 dimes searched.
But sometimes, you hit the motherload. In the past year, I found the following through my regular banks visits. 1) Solid roll of 50 silver dimes 2) Roll with 26 silver quarters 3) I got 102 silver dimes (one roll had 52 dimes and the other roll had 50 dimes) out of 20 rolls.

Dime searching falls into the category of "1% inspiration, 99% perspiration", IMHO. I got a scad of mixed change recently and went through the quarters, dimes and nickels. I did find 5 silver Roosies out of some $135. But to order dimes regularly, the skunk boxes might be lower than quarters, but you still get really low yields. |

I do dimes. I've been working 12+ hours a day so I haven't been doing much lately. I average right around 2 a box. In the almost 2 years I have been searching dimes I have found over a $100 face. $80 in Rosies, $15 in Mercuries and $5 in Canadians.

I was at a bank branch yesterday and she was really pushing me hard to take all their dimes off their hands. She said they get tons of dimes in and not many requests to buy dimes.
It is hard enough to stay caught up on pennies and nickels. I don't think I would have the time. |

I look when I get change. I haven't found any Mercury dimes yet. I've only been looking for a few months, though. |

I search dimes in between the halves. I usually have to wait for a half order to come in, so I will go through some dime boxes while I wait. I average around the same as everyone else, 1 - 2 per box. The nice thing about dimes is they are always available and all the banks will take them back with little to no hassle. The reward is fairly low, but I search them while watching my favorite TV shows so no dedicated time is waisted for such a low return. If you get the plastic rolls you can go thru a box in a few minutes, only breaking open the rolls that show something that needs a closer look. |
Running total: Halves searched:$14,445.50 90% found: 122 40% found: 481

EZMoney... according to your stats you are finding almost 43 silver coins per box??? Are you sure you didn't mean to post ten times the amount searched that you have posted? I just started, so granted, maybe I'll hit the motherlode someday, but I've been finding only three or four silvers per box (lots of skunks), and only ten in my best box. Where are you located? |

I've got EZ_Money coming in at 12.5 SILVERs per $500 box for the year. Others have done better. |

I like dimes, for the logistics reasons mentioned above, but still prefer halves.
Edge sorting is alot easier if you obtain boxes of the clear wrapped rolls.
This is obvious, but should you have to break rolls open, you have to haul alot fewer Coinlock bags back to the bank for the same number of coins searched.
I am less likely to get skunked as well.
Still, my Return On Searched COin is about half of what halves net me. |

I went in to my penny and nickel dump bank last week and on a lark, I pulled a "Hord" and asked for all their penny, nickel, and dime CWRs. Aside from the pennies and nickels, I got four dime rolls and one had a '64 silver.
The pennies had about a 30% CU return but few wheats.
The nickels had eight pre-'82s as is typical for our area (north central NY). I figure the pre-82s must have been in the state for a time as the contemporary canadian nickels are fewer and further between. Only for CWRs though. Fed boxes of nickels from local banks produce many more contemporary canadian nickels.

It's not all from boxes. I had a few lucky CWR hauls last year that really got me ahead. One bank I got $90 in rolls and every coin was silver. I actually have a hard time getting boxes. I travel for my job so I get alot of CWR and loose coins from several places (alot of small towns). The CWR are what have made my numbers climb so much. |

Hands down. You won!
Don't know how much of a history buff you are, but you can't be to far off the route Benedict Arnold took in the attempt to take Quebec in 1775? |

Been a while since I've been on. Not far, actually. He passed by a bit sough of here, by around 30-50 miles I think. Legend tells of a possible hoard of gold coins to be found either at the bottom of the dead river rapids near Eustis (where Arnold claimed they were lost in transit), or perhaps secreted in some special spot to be retreived at a later date. If anyone has some vacation time saved up, it's a gorgeous area! |

I'm working a $500 bag Wells Fargo hard to get halves now an at about 12 SKUNKS so I'll try the Dimes for a couple of weeks. My home bank was selling bags from their counter but now say they don't have any when I ask but School is out and that changes coin volume in small town. Have friend who has about $80 face 50 centers they bought in 1980 paid $10.40 hope I can find $1,000 when spot is down to $11.75, She will sell at coin shop buy price but thats over my allowance this week. |

As I stated earlier on this thread, I sort dimes along with everything else. There is one bank that I do not have accounts with, and I routinely ask to buy all of their customer wrapped coins, whatever they have. I also do bank-rolled boxes, usually on weekends. The 2 oldest coins I have found are dimes; a very worn 1880, and recently an 1884 "love coin" dime. I think the probability of a very old coin being in the dime mix is higher than with some of the larger coins that stand out more. The 1880 was in a customer rolled group, and the recent 1854 was in a bank rolled bag. |
