So I was thinking about it, and from the averages that I seem to see posted on the board and from my own experience it seems that sorting Halves for silver is the way to go.
The average box of dimes seems to yield 1-2 silver, while I think the boards average half box yields about 4.5 (if I read the information correctly on the tracking threads)...so........
If Halves are:
1) Easiest to sort b/c of size 2) Found the most 3) Are the highest face value
it seems like they are the most profitable to sort.
Now...I enjoyed sorting the one box of dimes that I did look at, and it was nice to add a different denomination to the stack.
So I was just wondering if people agree that halves seem to be the best ROI, and also if there is any reason to sort other coins (besides the obvious that it's just fun to switch it up sometimes)
Look forward to hearing some opinions.

I've yet to sort a box of nickels, but I'm sorta itching to do it.

| They may be the most profitable, but Im really hating getting skunked all the time. Maybe I need more patience, but Ive really been enjoying the wheats with the pennies |

Since these are nationwide searching averages, halves do seem to be the most productive way to search. However, there are locations where the SILVER in halves is non-existent. I think it depends on what you see in your searching area. For some, dimes or nicks would be more productive than halves to find SILVERs. While SILVER searching is inconsistent, pennies will produce 20-30% coppers for you. |

| My experience is that silver half dollars in my area are MUCH more difficult to find than they were a couple years ago. So I added dimes and quarters, as well as nickles and pennies. I find dimes more dependable than halfs or quarters. I would give up on quarters altogether, except for the infrequent rich scores. Half dollars are well over 50% skunk boxes for me, and that leaves me with a car full of heavy coins with nothing to show for it. If I could get 4 silver coins of any type from every half dollar box, I would sort only halfs. But for the past 6 or 9 months it has been more like 1 40% silver every 3rd or 4th box. Not very encouraging. |

| Half dollars are not always available, or the bank orders and they do not come in. Then I sort dimes, not nearly as much silver, but enough to make it worth while. And of course you should sort pennies. |

| I sort halfs when they are available. If I can't find any halfs or can't get a box, I will sort dimes. The good thing about dimes is every bank has them and every bank will take them. |
Running total: Halves searched:$14,445.50 90% found: 122 40% found: 481
Dimes Searched $2100 Found: 5 |

If my finds were that low, I think I would give it up. Then again, just about when you're ready to quit, you'll hit a decent box encouraging you to hang in there a bit longer. Keeping good stats is vital to determining if it is worth your time to keep looking |

halves are much easier to sort I don't halve to use a magnyfing glass to see the dates ...cents are rewarding every box....nickels...well its allot of sorting for 1 or 2 keepers(wn, bufs)I have done quarters...easy to do by edge sorting but then we were looking for statehood quarters...I am glad that is over for now. Not done dimes may give that a try soon. |

From my own stats, Return On Search COin for dimes has been roughly half of what I have been running on halves, but honestly I don't search enough dimes to make a fair comparison.
BUT, halves are more hit and miss, distribution-wise.
Dimes have alot less of a disposal problem, both in their smaller size (more dimes/AG chances per coinlock sack) and the fact that they are more readily used in commerce.
I suppose if capitalization was not an issue, you could make a convincing case that dimes could be more profitable per weight of searched/returned coin.
Also factor in the time involved unrolling halves vs. edge scanning clear Brinks rolls of dimes...
