Time indeed is one of the most precious things we have; we can't control time but we certainly are required to be good managers of it. I have often thought to myself 'is this truly worth my time?' The answer is quite simple. A couple of weeks ago, I went over a co-worker's house to sort through some of his pennies. It was a great time of fun and fellowship which we otherwise would have never had. Every moment spent sorting cents is time spent enjoying the hunt, the find, and even the savings. What else am I going to do in 2 hours I set aside for sorting? Worry and stress about how I can make more money or work myself to death on a job? I'd rather spend my time enjoying life. Time spent in enjoyment is never wasted. |

That's the beauty of paying with zinc pennies.. they know they don't really want them, but at least they know what they are.
On a similar note, albeit with fiat currency, one semester in college I had a $400+ balance I had to pay before I could register for classes. I got the last laugh by going to every bank in town so that I could pay the balance with nothing but $2 bills! I probably still have a photo of the inch-thick stack somewhere in my college papers. |

glenn, Like what, you're aware of course, this is a forum full of penny hoarders, and your first post was basicly a finger in the eye of nearly everyone here? |

Sorry about your attitude concerning a hobby we all enjoy here. I would try not to waste any more valuable time on the computer demeaning what we do in our free time for fun if I were you. But, if that's what you choose to do and don't consider it a huge waste of your valuable time, go ahead and have fun! Enough said - I have pennies I want to look at! |

| Well said Epaphras and TXTim. Time spent doing something you enjoy is truly time well spent. Many folks spend large sums of money to do what they enjoy, yet here we are doing it basically for free. I'm sure my girlfriend would rather I spend my time doing something other than playing with my pennies.. but that would be something she would enjoy, not necessarily something I would enjoy.. LOL. And let's not forget the fellowship of sharing our fun here with kindred spirits. We each only have so much time.. we don't even know for sure how much time that is.. it could end tomorrow. We are often required to spend a good portion of our time just providing basic food, shelter and clothing. We are fortunate that we still have time left after those basic needs are covered to pursue something that truly brings us joy. Live each day as if it was you last.. one day you'll be right. |

| ok...its a hobby...and admittedly a unique one, i enjoy finding wheat cents myself, that's what got me into coin collecting...but there is a limit to what is practical. believe me, i am not one to sanction a categorical normality that all follow. it is just that some have seemed to have slipped into the realm of wasting their time vs. making a positive change (no pun intended) in this world.... |

Well that's is it Glenn, the qwestion is perspective.
I know a guy, actually a relative of mine, who has been painting his kitchen for about 10 years. When I go to his house and see bare sanded walls, he shows me websites about "milk based organic paints".
That's kewl! What he doesn't show me is a painted kitchen.
Fine! It is afterall, HIS kitchen. Except, his wife is totally f---ing P-ssed off at him. She wants to paint it, but he won't let her.
The sad fact is that this is a true story. Made up stories of this type are not nearly as sad as this one.
Back to pennies. If I spent much time on pennies, I probably wouldn't; 1. fix that leaky faucet and replace the the toilet valve mechanism. 2. Mow the lawn, and take the compost bin out to the backyard. 3. etc.
Is it possible to be pennywise AND ...
Finish the sentence ...? |

I have a hoard of pennies
UNSORTED
I will sort them when and if that task becomes more important than replacing the old stuck doorknob that connects the kitchen to the back porch.
Until then, my hoard sits. Unsorted.
This general idea has led me to hoard nickels, which will never be sorted. |

Glenn and Me2, This particular thread is called "Getting Rid of Zincs". Whatever your goal is, Please refrain from hijacking threads at Realcent.forumco.com, If you guys would like, feel free to develop a parallel forum called, "The penny unsorting forum" or "I hate penny sorters" or something else thats suits your business. This particular thread was posted as a place to share ideas about re-injecting zincs to circulation in an effective way. Just look at the title of the thread and you will be clued in, on appropriate subject matter. Neither of you have contributed to that premise with your negative approach to sorting pennies, all you've done is steer this thread off course, way to go guys. A lot of people have dedicated much labor, capital, and time, settting these coins aside for whatever reason, and we try to keep a positive approach to this, and share intellegent ideas toward the process. I can tell you that since starting selling the sorters, I have met the most intellegent group of individuals that I have personally been exposed to, Doctors, Lawyers, Manufacturers, business owners, Accountants, Engineers, etc, etc etc. These are the people that are keeping the wheels on their own bus, looking forward for opportunities to protect their wealth. This activity is perhaps a once in a lifetime opportunity, it could be hundreds of years before sound tangible currency is used as circulating coinage in any country. Most here are sharing ideas to take advantage of the opportunity. Thanks for your future co-operation. Andy |

| call "De la Rue" in MN and ask them where in your state are their customer coin collecting/sorting machines sold and to which banks/credit unions/savings and loans and then go open an account there to avoid the 1-4% 'fee" for taking your change and withdraw the money after you dump your zinc with an ATM card outside. That is what i do with two different banks where I live.......... |

Hey Me2, (this is off topic, sorry) I know that guy too, or one just like him. (last name Hamabata???)
His daughter and mine grew up together. When they were in 3rd or 4th grade he decided to remodel the kitchen. They have been washing dishes in the bathroom and cooking on a hot plate ever sense. Our daughter's will graduate high school next year. I visited them about 6 months ago and saw their nice looking stove and refrigerator in the front hall way. |

That is a great idea. I use De la Rues at three place in Indianapolis, but there could be better locations that I don't know about.
Also, I love the De la Rues. The are very fast and they sometimes think that pennies are dimes. They mess up at least 1 in 10,000 coins. On the flip side I would hesitate to throw a bunch of dimes in there as I have seen dimes end-up mixed in with pennies. |

| Someone finally unloaded a Brinks box with nothing but rerolled zincs in my source bank. I told my source teller, that if it happens again I won't take the coins from that person. She was out sick when it happened and will make sure it doens't happen again. |

| Hey, it could happen. The fact that it did happen just shows you that thee are more copper hoarders out there than you thought. Most of them probably don't even come to this board.. they are shadow hoarders. Might want to have some scales handy to do box weights or roll weights if this becomes more commonplace. That way you won't waste any of your valuable sorting time. It hasn't happened to me yet, but I'm sure it will eventually. |

I respect and compliment some of your assumption that one persons lead could challenge the little world of penny sorting. The defensive nature and awkward responses from the forum is revealing. The hijacking that I am doing is your creation because of your own self doubts i guess; i was just raising concerns that anyone with a single nut screwed in their head would have…do not associate me your pre-conceptions of a non-existent world yet to be… “Neither of you have contributed to that premise with your negative approach to sorting pennies, all you've done is steer this thread off course, way to go guys. Glenn, let me disabuse you of this perception. You typed your posts, did you not? Your hijacking was your creation, and it lends nothing positive to this forum. Your contrarian point of view was initially welcomed by several members, including myself, but you proceeded to insult our hobby. Obviously, we're here because we see penny hoarding as a meaningful endeavor. Realcent members may have differing opinions, and many disagreements arise, but we keep our animosity in check and post respectfully. Please do the same. Any further hijacking, trolling, or other unsubstantial posts will not be tolerated. Period. |

Glen or whatever why do post stuff like that? Fiatboy is correct it is an insult to stuff we love do like play with coins. I hoard copper since I get enjoyment out searching bank boxs to find cool coins to install in my 1909 thru 2007 penny folders. I save all my 59 thru 81 copper set rejects I will not use in my sets. Reason I save them is I just like these guys hoping someday those 59 thru 81 coppers will be worth tons of money. Becides me saving all copper pennys. I buy half dollars and hoard the silver coins and build sets out of those to. I even hoard all pre 1960 nickels , silver dimes, quarters I find out there.
I may spend to much time or use gas driving around hiting banks or coin roll hunting. Its what I love to do with my time . Some guys like to go fishing or go hunting or build race cars and drive them or whatever. We may lose an few dollars on gas or time doing it on junk coin boxes with no decent finds.
Thats what we coin roll hunters enjoy and we get pleasure out of it. Life without pleasure would be so no fun and boring. You can say whatever and it dont mater to me . I am not going stop hoarding copper or stop building sets, coin roll hunting. Its my life and thats what I get pleasure out of. Intill then I get no pleasure out it I will find something I will pleasure out of.
Please if you dont playing with coins like all the members on this site do. Go find an hobby to get pleasure out of . I cant tell you what to do but find something you enjoy in life

I love those fed boxes and hoard up pre 64 silver coins such as rolls of 64 half dollers. Maybe copper will be very expensive such as silver is. |

| This thread has gone way off the topic of getting rid of zinc cents. I too should have not added to the change of topic. I'm sorry for not taking action sooner. Since I can't move only the off topic posts on it to another thread, I'm going to lock it. Any discussion of the merits of penny or nickel hoarding must go on another thread clearly titled as such. Any insults made against a member of this group or realcent in general may be grounds for having your account locked. |
