Just an update to the relationship conversation posted earlier.... Today I was traveling south only 12 miles to another community so I decided to stop at all the banks and search for more "bags" of $50 pennies. (many more banks in this town & several that I have accounts at! I thought it would be a good day)
Apperently, someone robbed one of the banks this week (Ironicly it was the first bank I stopped at) and every teller and manager in the town looked at me as if I where asking them to tell me the exact delivery time of brinks & the combination to the vault. :-(
All afternoon spent looking, to get only 1 bag and it wasn't from that town.... I will try again, eventually they learn to recognize you and give in.
BUT, it helps me realize what a blessing I have with the banks I currently have in the 2 communities I travel most frequently....
HCBT, I think you are right! I think next week will be chocolate delivery week to not only my dump bank but also the sell banks!

Yes, you should definately take care of the tellers at your sell banks too. Maybe you will have more luck asking for boxes instead of bags. I can't get any bags in my area.. always just boxes. I need to go on a road trip like that.. it is a good way to discover new source banks and develop new relationships. Ah.. the thrill of the hunt. |

Hello Everyone,
I am just getting started in the copper minning business. I have a Ryedale on order that is supposed to show up tomorrow, and I have 7 bags sitting here ready to give it a good test.
I have been getting bags for several years but I have been looking for wheats and some BU coins and turning the rest back. So I have several banks that already know me as the penny guy. But now that I have went into the minning business I won't be turning near as many back. So I don't think I will have any problem getting bags. The problem will be the same as everyone else getting rid of the zincers.
I found a site on the web that might be of some help to you, it lists some of the "FREE OR VERY LOW COST COUNTING SITES" in each state. Just click on your state and it will give you a list. The site is You must be logged in to see this link. check it out. And you can add sites if you know of some that are not listed.

| Welcome to the forum NDFARMER. I am always looking for wheats and BU coins too. Keeping the copper just adds a whole new dimension to it. This way you will hardly ever get skunked on a bag. I have been to that site but unfortunately there are no banks in my area listed. I have gotten pretty creative at getting rid of zinc though, since I have to get rid of a lot of it. Congrats on getting a Ryedale.. it is a fantastic machine! |

I have tried that site but it seems to be all old info for my area. |

I'm hoarding zinc.
Coinflation says that a copper is worth 216 % of face and a zinc is only worth 63.75% So Why would I hoard zinc?
Well, because 63.75% is the third best in the line up. Dimes, Qwarters, clad halfs are only worth 20.32% and I hoard them too. It wouldn't take a big jump in the price of zinc to make them worth more than face. Also another significant drop in the value of the dollar, and therefore the value of the penny, would push the value of a zinc over the 100% mark. At its high point about a year ago, the lowly zinc came near the 100% mark.
I predict that zincs will in fact go over face, if not this year, next year. I think they are worth keeping!
But by far Nickels are still my favorite! |

Great you pay shipping (same as gas, and time/trouble etc but it arrives on your stoop) and I'll send you my zinc. Thanks for starting such a helpful service for all us copper hoarders. I can get about $80.00 in each flat rate box. No sorting needed either on your end, whatever I send I guarentee is zinc. Deal? |

Good move. I'm bullish on zinc as well, and foresee zinc pennies being analagous to 40% silver halves---Not as great as 90% silver (or a future play on copper pennies), but worth more than face and worth holding onto. |

| I suppose I hoard zinc too.. just not on purpose.. except for a few boxes of BU's. There always seems to be several buckets of zinc sitting around just waiting for me to bag up and take to the bank or roll up and buy gas with. No way I could afford to hold all that zinc. I would much rather take it back and convert it into more unsorted boxes. |

If it is too good to be true, Then it is NOT true, but, If it is too bad to be true, Well ... That's just too bad!
Ryedale is kidding of course, I can just see the smirk on his face.
I think the crowning achievement however goes to FIATBOY for making the observation that zincs will be treated like 40% silver. I wish I has thought of that!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

| I have been using Coinstar for JC Penney credits at no charge, but am running out of things that I need. How about a Ryedale gift card? Does Ryedale need any Penney credits? How about Ryedale takes Resturant cards.....you could eat out for life! |

Many banks in my area have coin counters in the lobby, so I'm spoiled. When I can't access those, I roll my zincs and spend them a few dollars at a time. Stamp vending machines at the post office take pennies, and many are available 24 hours a day in the post office lobby. I've had to use them twice. I needed a stamp and needed to get rid of some zincs, so I pumped the thing full of zinc, and got back a stamp and some dollar coins. I haven't yet been desperate enough to use the infamous coinstar hack, and hope I never am. (I don't recommend this, but there is info about it available using a simple google search.)
I recently turned in over $700 in zincs, and I was a little nervous about doing so, but after I got over the weird looks, it wasn't too bad. The Brinks guy actually showed up right when I was finishing, and we exchanged knowing glances. |

| The Amazon.com gift cards are not a bad way to go if you use Coinstar. There is always something good on Amazon. I thought about doing the Circuit City ecards and buying myself a new big screen TV, but I don't think I want to camp out in front of the Coinstar machine that long at 500-600 coins per minute. With my luck the machine would fill up after the first couple of bags. |

I became a member today of a new bank. Not only did I open the account with $40 in zinc, but they have no problem accepting all my deposits in loose bags! I informed her that it would be a substantial amount a week, in almost all pennies. No problem for them. Even told me they have a cart I can use if I need it. Then to top it off, she tells me that they would be more than happy to order ANY amount of coin for me for free. I was almost speechless. By far best bank experience I have had in a long time. Bought a box before I left even. I wasn't even planning on stopping in, just stopped there because the light was red at the intersection. Like the bank was calling me or something.
All in all I found a great buy bank, and a dump bank all in one! This will go great with that new Ryedale....

To quote my favorite animated corpulant 3rd grader.. "Sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet!" That sounds like the perfect bank. Maybe some banks are actually getting back to delivering good customer service. When they try to sell you on their other services like a credit card, go along with it.. they are treating you right so let them try to market their other services to you.
Another thing you might consider is asking them to sell you any loose bags of pennies that they have on hand that did not come from you instead of shipping them. Saves a lot of time on sorting pennies if you can get them loose in the bag and not have to break them out of rolls.
Do the bags you turn in have to be exact count, or will they just count them up and credit your account. Will they provide the bags? Most banks will provide the shipping bags for free 'cause they like you to use their bags. If you had to buy those coin shipment bags they would be over 50 cents each. You probably need to stop by there and pick up some more pennies and some empty shipment bags. That way you will be ready to rock and roll as soon as the big red monster arrives. Optimimum order quantity for me at my regular banks is 24 boxes. That fits well on a cart and cuts down on the number of trips you have to make to the bank. You can cycle your zincs back to the bank so you don't have too much hoard capital tied up. If your bags need to be exact count you will want to start looking for a good quality coin counter. There is another thread on here that El Dee started regarding those. There is also good information on the recommended sorting equipment thread. |

I have already thought of buying their bags with my bags basically. They DO NOT need to be counted. They credit it directly to my account. Ready for immediate withdrawal, or conversion to more pennies. Not sure if they have the bags or not, didn't think to ask. Thanks for the tip. Hopefully I can get by there this week before it comes. I could use another couple hundred dollars of pennies....

| Glad I could help. I learned the hard way about not keeping enough empty bags on hand. The dump bank ran out of bags and I couldn't turn any zincs in there because there were no bags available. Always a good idea to keep plenty of empty bags on hand. It is good that we can learn from each other's experiences here. That is one sweet bank. Is it just a local bank or part of a national chain? Make sure you treat them right. Chocolates for the coin lady would be a good idea.. especially if you can find those chocolate coins in a little net bag. |

The bank is in 20+ states. Semi-national? Only three branches in my town, but this particular one is all I need. Several buy banks and one, more than willing, buy/dump bank. Seems good for now....Man this is getting bad....I need to turn some zincs into some chocolate coin.

As promised.. I converted zinc to oil (petroleum products) today.
Spending zinc is fun! Sure, anybody can probably take it back to the bank.. the challenge is in using it for your daily transactions so you don't bump your limit at the bank. I dropped an entire $25 box of zinc pennies at the gas station, just like I said I would. Hey, the price was 6 cents cheaper for cash. The guy said "I'm not sure what the boss is going to say" I told him he probably wouldn't like it much but cash is cash. The trick is to act like it's the most natural thing in the world to conduct your business in cold hard cash. Of course a story about the high price of gas and food (those things we all have to buy that are not figured in core inflation) making you poor doesn't hurt. Then I dropped another $25 box of zinc at the grocery store. The cashier didn't have enough room in the till for an entire box of pennies but they handled it fine at the service counter. I was so excited about dumping 2 boxes of zinc that I forgot what I went to the store for in the first place.. forgot the milk. Fortunately I still had a few rolls of pennies left. Stopped at another grocery store to buy a couple of gallons. The cashier there was not as friendly.. her eyes bugged out when I put 11 rolls of pennies on the counter. She said she had no room in her till for them.. that she might be willing to take 2 rolls. I told her fine.. cancel the transaction. I stopped at another store up the street and bought my milk where they were happy to take my 11 rolls of pennies. So what I learned today is that you can get by with a few rolls at the grocery store but they have very limited space in the till. You should probably stop by the service counter and see if they will do a conversion for you to facilitate your transaction. It's not like the grocery store can't use a few rolls of pennies. It certainly didn't hurt that all these rolls were machine wrapped.. places tend to be more accepting of bank wrapped rolls. |

Wow! What great anecdotes! I think you're right that the key is to act like it's the most natural thing in the world.
I like the idea of asking the service counter to exchange pennies for cash. I'll do this next time I go grocery shopping. Make it clear that you intend to spend money on their products, and I don't see why they wouldn't oblige. |
