A backpack type water filter would come in handy, I have this one: You must be logged in to see this link.
I also keep 30 gallons of water in 5 gallon water cans on hand, and rotate the water in and out every six months. Push come to shove and I’ll boil what I can find.2

I am in the effected area of the MWRA water main break. The whole neighborhood was rushing around clearing the shelves of bottled water from every supermarket around while I was relaxing in my home with a cup of coffee admiring my stack of poland spring cases. |

I live in the city so no natural spring but there is a running creek behind the house leading to a series of lakes and we have a pool as well. Have quite a few 55 gallon drums to supply a family of four people and two small dogs for 90 days. Also prepped at a fair cost is a Katadyn Pocket filter and an MSR waterworks filter along with an extra filter each to crank out several 10k gallons of filtering capacity. Food storage without water is useless. |

Any suggestions on the cheapest place to get food-grade 55-gallon drums? I don't have room for any drums where I'm at right now (in an upstairs apartment ), but since I'm hoping to have a house soon, I'm just trying to think ahead.
In lieu of that at the moment, though, I've got 30-count packs of half-liter bottled water from Sam's Club, about 40 gallons at the moment. It runs about $1 a gallon, which isn't bad. |

Nickeless, In the past I have located 55 gallon drums at food processing companies. They were used to store grape concentrate in and cleaned out easily. They even had the cap to seal them tightly. Check around you might be able to find them at your local bottling company or maybe a winery also. I think I paid $5.00 each for them. Well worth it. |

Nickelless- I bought blue food grade barrels from a guy I found on craigslist who had them already pre-cleaned (re-cleaned and sanitized them with a bleach soaking for peace of mind)for $15 ea. Like wheeler_dealer stated, barrels that previously had juice (aloe vera juice in my case) is a great way to go. Other food related contents can cause complications in cleaning- esp if the barrels have a solid top with just one or two bung holes. Imagine cleaning "food grade" barrels full of thick sticky "food" i.e. molasses. |

Don't forget the easiest route to go as well in double duty; save your soda bottles and buy ready to go soups as well as veggies in cans. Ready to go soups don't need extra water. That saves you a can of water there. Canned veggies come packed in water. That's an extra can of liquid there for drinking or cooking. Soda bottles r food grade bottles. You buy them, use them, clean them, and reuse them. Read Kathy in FL "A Will to Survive".

I always have a back up supply. Growing up in Florida you always had to have extra in case of hurricanes. Also I remember my grandparents always having a ton of extra supplies, a canning kitchen, and a "victory garden" guess its in the blood |

Back in 1994 after the northridge quake our local beer company stopped making beer and bottled water. They were passed out free of charge to the schools. The beer cans were plain with only the co name and the word water on it. |

Do you have empty space in the freezer?
I keep containers of water in the freezer to fill the empty spaces. I rotate it in and out as space is needed: -No need to worry about it going bad. -Helps save on the power bill. -Helps keep the frozen stuff frozen longer in a power outage. -Downside, it needs to thawed for use.
