Let me start out by saying that I am as guilty as the next person when it came to the idea of bugging out. I had (and still have) my bug out bag packed and ready, just waiting for TSTHTF. Why I’d be out the door in a flash and headed out to a number of places I thought would be a good location. I was ready… but was I?

Take a moment and reflect on the places you plan on bugging out to, now being honest with yourself, ask yourself how many hundreds of other people are planning to go to the very same places. If you were lucky enough to get there first could you keep possession and control of your location? Would you find yourself lumped in with the countless other refugees there all vying for what limited resources there are?

Speaking of resources, how much can you take with you when you bug out? How much in you vehicle, and how long would they last? How much in your bug out bag, and how long would that last? Then what?

What are the roads, highways and byways going to be like when you’re bugging out? Can you get to where your going, or will you be swept up in the human tide and be fed upon by the human jackals that will be trying to flee as well.

The short answer is plan on where you want to be when TSHTF and start making an effort to move there now. Ideally a few acres a mile or two outside a small town (a one gas station, one post office, one grocery store kind of town). Start that garden, chicken yard, and so on now. But most importantly meet and integrate yourself into the local community. Because no one is going to survive TSTHTF by themselves, it takes a village to survive. So make plans on Bugging In instead of Bugging Out, the process will make life, as you know it now even better.

Beautifully put!

You just described my area. We been here going on 8 years, no post office, it's in the next township over, maybe 8-10 miles. The one store/gas station is between owners currently. My landlord has 20 acres or better total here with a stocked pond, wooded. My trading partner and trusted friend is my neighbor 2 doors down with another 15 acre wooded. Rural farmland overall, and let me tell you in southern Indiana we can FARM. It's in the blood.

Across the street from him another community member has a few acres open lot, and we were talking about a community garden for the neighborhood. 80% or better are family in some way, 3-4 generations deep. down the road a fellow has chickens. We don't eat many eggs, but he offered. It's the thought. We help each other out. We have talked of hogs, if not this year the next. They have a pen, another will but the shoates, another a few bags of corn, etc etc. I don't really eat pork, but I'll sell/trade my share out.

Bugging in. I like that. I mean where could I run better than here?

My whole approach to prepping has been geared toward bugging-in rather than bugging-out. My fiancee is disabled (she has spina bifida but can walk with crutches), so making a quick escape to my bug-out location would be problematic if I had a bug-out location. What Laura and I are doing is trying to find an accessible house we can live in after we get married, with one thing I'm absolutely insisting on: a massive in-ground basement, not just a "lower level" like a lot of newer houses have. I want a full-size basement that will allow more than ample room for my preps and which wouldn't be a part of the house that visitors would go to. I'm starting to run into space challenges at the moment and I've got to do some reorganizing because I'm just living in an efficiency apartment right now, so I hope I can get a house soon!

I too live outside of a one post office, one gas station, one grocery store, town. Not if but when TSHTF I won't have to go anywhere either. We know our neighbors, we have a big garden, don't have any chickens yet but plenty of room to let a few run if I want to get some. It's the people that live in big cities, that don't know their neighbors, and don't have any garden space that have to think about bugging out when it happens. Some people make fun of us rural folk but you couldn't get me to live in a big city for anything.
