I enjoyed last season. Good info on mining, treasure hunting, and such. Very much looking forward to this season. Looks like they have a new host? Thanks for the reminder, wavecrazed.

Just saw the episode on copper. I think I will take the clan on a day trip to the U.P. of Michigan this summer and try my luck on a $50 pile of rocks to find some native copper.

For: Hirbonzig, re Michigan's UP.
Ok now, this is all top secret. I very rarely give out information about my secret spots, but alas, I am getting old. I go to the following location every summer, and score several hundred pounds of copper globs and stampings with my metal detector. I'm not talking about rocks with copper in them, or copper ore. These are pure copper blobs and chunks, with a brilliant green patina on them.

You must be logged in to see this link. ZOOM IN, until you can see the individual street names in Kearsarge.

The Wolverine Copper Mine tailing piles are just loaded with copper! Check the flat access paths that are partway up the piles. The copper chunks are in the areas that have coal clinkers. This is a major find!!!!!! Viewable from the baseball field.
Take 4th Street, to the end (East-South) to little dirt trail on right. I will be there in early June of 2008.

Also Note: Where to find taconite pellets in Marquette County – U.P.

If traveling eastbound on 41: Take Hwy 41 to Hwy 492. Head east on 492 (3.1 miles) to Diamond Junction. Diamond Jct. is a driveway on the south side that leads to the RR tracks and an ORV trail. The RR tracks are full of taconite pellets. Do not park on the ORV trail.
If traveling westbound on 41: Take Hwy 41 to Hwy 35. Head south on 35 (1.6 miles) to Hwy 492. Take Hwy 492 westbound (0.2) miles to Diamond Junction.

Note: At least three separate sets of RR tracks cross Hwy 35 within three miles of Hwy 41 (southbound on 35). The first set is abandoned and contains no taconite. The second two sets of tracks are active and full of pellets, but it may be unsafe to park on the shoulder of Hwy 35.

ULTRA TOP SECRET!!!PEOPLE PAY FOR THE FOLLOWING:
How to find the Lake Ellen Kimberlite pipe.

Take Highway 95 to the town of Channing. Just north of town is a sign indicating a public access "Dam Site". Follow this west, you will be on Lake Ellen Rd.
Continue westbound on Lake Ellen Rd, you will encounter a sharp (90 degree) turn to the right (north). A couple miles up the road you will encounter a fork, follow the fork to the left (NW).
The road will have several small curves. You will pass from Dickenson County into Iron County. The asphalt road will change colors at this county line, and will be noticibly better in Iron County.
Continue NW a couple miles until you encounter another fork in the road, this is the intersection of Lake Ellen Rd. and Channing Rd.
Turn left onto Channing Rd, you will head south a bit, then the road curves due west. Continue west a couple miles until you reach the intersection (Tee) of Channing Rd and Phelan Rd. If you look due west and a little to the left at this point, you will see a large hill. This is Michigamme Mtn.
Turn right onto Phelan Rd. (north). Follow Phelan Rd. due north until you reach a tee in the road. At this tee, Channing Rd. continues to the left (west), and Davis Rd. to the right. If you turn right, you will end up at a Baptist Bible Camp and have an opportunity to save your soul.
Pay close attention here! If you are more interested in Kimberlite than your soul, turn left from Phelan Rd. onto Phelan Rd. (Yes - from Phelen to Phelen).
Go west on Phelen Rd. 0.2 miles. On your left is a neatly mowed homemade airstrip with a bunch of "No Tresspassing" signs. On your right is a dirt trail better fit for quad runners than your car. Turn right (north) onto this dirt trail. Continue on this trail about a 1/4 mile and you will encounter a yellow painted, heavy duty steel gate. When I was there the gate was broken, and wide opened. If the gate is closed, you will have to park off to the side, (don't block the gate) and walk the remaining 1/4 mile.
If the gate is opened than drive right in. About 1/4 mile past the gate is a small pit on the left. THIS IS IT! Turn off the trail and park on the south side of the pit. If you have a truck, you can drive right to the bottom of it.

The Kimberlite will be the grey crumbly rock that is everywhere. If you climb a bit up the pit walls you will notice where others have chipped, chistled, or otherwise dug out samples.
The weathered Kimberlite has a yellowish apperence. It is dark grey when you first chip it out of the ground. On the sidewalls, brush off the loose crumbly rock and you will find the solid but heavily fractured Kimberlite. It is very easy to chip out with a mallet and chistle.
You will also see thin veins of white Calcite in the rock. This is from rainwater filling in the fractures. If you wet the kimberlite, and view it under a bright light you will notice red garnet and hopefully diamonds.

Note: If you missed the trail from Phelen Rd., you will come to a dead end at the Michigamme Reservior public access and campsite. Porta-Johns on site.

I love that show. I went to Gem Mountain once a few years ago. I still have a bag of stones somewhere. I also had two cut and ended up with a nice Amethyst and Topaz.

Are you throwing that out?
