The year 1909 in coins is fascinating to me. At the start of the year, the mint was producing Indian cents. Soon after, they switched to the Lincoln cent, and both mints used the wheat design with the VDB initials on the reverse. Within a few weeks, they removed the initials, creating a third type. Through this year, there were two mints producing coins: San Fransisco and Philadelphia. That makes for a grand total of 6 cents in one year!
So I am founding THE 1909 CLUB. If you want to join THE 1909 CLUB, all you have to do is find one of those six cents in your sorting, and post about it here. It's a rather exclusive club, wouldn't you say? But it's a club that, with a little diligence, you could be a part of.
So... if you have found a 1909 cent in the year 2010, please post information about it below. Pictures are not necessary, but would be very much appreciated (and maybe even envied).
On a side note, if you would like to be an ancillary member of THE 1909 CLUB, you may provide information about finding another United States coin from 1909 - any denomination is fine.
And you know what? If you find a world coin from 1909 in your searches, go ahead and post that too. We'll call that the international division.
PS: Above is the very first time I have ever used the word ancillary.

cool, Chris! Does it have the VDB initials on the back? Sometimes the initials can be VERY hard to see. They can be blurred into the rim, or nearly worn away, or... whatever else. But here is a nice beautiful example for future reference of all.

Congrats, Zyll! F-VF is pretty amazing condition for a penny that old! Got any pics? Do you have a Ryedale or were you hand-sorting?
I was using a Ryedale Ace. I just updated the post with pics. Edit: I know that my cellphone doesn't take very sharp closeups, but based on my photos, would you say I assessed the condition accurately? The obv wear looks F but I said VF due to the full lines on the wheat ear tops... comments appreciated! |

Liking the pics, zyll. Those were taken with your cell? Pretty good for something that's designed to make phone calls. |

Got my first 1909 Wheat of the year - tried as hard as I could with the magnifying glass to imagine me a VDB or S but no dice, just regular 1909, still I now have both a 1909 Indian and 1909 wheat this year! |

I wonder if anyone will ever find a 1909S Indian. Ever. What say you? Are the results we have been getting so far what you expected? |

i normally do not 'report' unless i have done $100. BUTTTTTTTT. exception for a 1909 P .
as i sort my 10.00 increments, i put the 59, cdn and wheat on a cottage cheese container lid. then tally up at the end. well imagine my surprise and unbelieving when i turned over the two wheats yesterday and there was the 09 staring back. i think it is my third.
