Hi
Im new here. I have been hand sorting for 6 months now and just found out about this site a month ago. I am having trouble getting a box ($100) per bank visit. I have spread it around to 7 different branches but it is still not enough. I hear people talking about getting coins from Brinks. Are you able to do this in Canada and do they charge fees?

do you have any of the larger banks in your area? Like Bank of America or Wells Fargo for example?

At my local Bank of America (town of around 50,000) I can order as many boxes as I want. They prefer that I just order boxes instead of showing up asking for multiple boxes. I can pop in and grab a box at anytime it seems, but anything more than that and they prefer to order the boxes. Free of charge. I have a savings account and checking account there with minimal ammounts of money in it. I use that bank just for the coin ordering. I typically just order a couple of boxes a week lately, so nothing too crazy.

When you order boxes do you get many that are directly from the mint? Here in Canada if that happens then it’s a waste of time because the mint is sorting coins as well. When I ask for a box I ask for a box of circulated nickels and pretty often they only have mint boxes. One friendly bank actual showed me that every box of nickel they had was what my girlfriend and I call "cud"... pre-sorted coins from the mint

It still amazes me that the Canadian government is smart enough to sort for nickel but the U.S government doesn't want to be bothered with it.

Don't get me wrong; I really don't want the U.S government to start pulling copper pennies etc out of circulation. Leave that to us :-)

To answer the thread topic- "Ask and ye shall receive"

The first panacea for a mismanaged nation is inflation of the currency; second is war. Both bring a temporary (and false) prosperity; both bring a permanent ruin. But both are the refuge of political and economic opportunities.

Frugalcanuck, are there any banks that have bags of nickels that they ship back to their coin supplier, so they wouldn't have to special-order a box? That's been the way I've been getting most of my nickels, offering to help unload a bag or two and save the bank the fees that Brinks would charge them for taking the bags.

I agree with Nickelless; I got cut off by a couple of Chase branches because they were told not to order big volumes of coin because of their small vault. However, they call me up whenever they have a big supply from what customers have brought in. You usually have better luck with the customer wrapped rolls anyway.

Nickelless, you forget that all coin in Canada travels rolled, not bulk.

Banks never have loose coins at branches before the coins go back out? Do they roll them at the branches?

Hand rolls. Very inefficient. I love it :-)

Can't they afford coin-rolling machines in Canada, eh?

Price should go up now that CDI is out of biz.

I am told that Garda got the business for Coinstar.

Nah, they will be doing the ARP for the mint, so they will be sorted.

Are you sorting 700 a week or keeping it? My bank will get me pennies out the wazoo, but seem irritated if I ask for nickels as "they are harder to get." Don't rock the boat baby.
