OK, so I thought it would be fun to crunch some numbers and figure out how many pennies it would take to make a stack that's equal in height to some well known objects in the world. I based my calculation on 17 pennies per inch, which works out to 204 per foot. I also included the weight of each stack based upon 150 pennies equaling a pound.

So how does your stack measure up? I think I went high enough for even the biggest guns on this site!

Me (6 ft.) 1224 pennies/ 8.16 lbs

Average Giraffe (17 ft.) 3468 pennies/ 23.12 lbs

Lincoln Memorial (99 ft.) 20,196 pennies/ 134.6 lbs

Old North Church Steeple (191 ft.) 38,964 pennies/ 259.7 lbs

Brooklyn Bridge Tower (276 ft.) 56,304 pennies/ 375.3 lbs

Great Pyramid of Giza (455 ft.) 92,820 pennies/ 618.8 lbs

Gateway Arch, St. Louis (630 ft.) 128,520 pennies/ 856.8 lbs

Empire State Building (1454 ft.) 296,616 pennies/ 1977.4 lbs

Burj Khalifa, Dubai (2727 ft.) 554,268 pennies/ 3695.1 lbs

Mt. Washington, NH (6288 ft.) 1,282,752 pennies/ 8551.6 lbs

Pikes Peak, CO (14,110 ft.) 2,878,440 pennies/ 19,189 lbs

Mt. Everest (29,029 ft.) 5,921,916 pennies/ 39,479 lbs

And that's about it for terrestrial objects, but if you're sufficiently inspired you can always shoot for a stack that goes to the far edges of the stratosphere (31 miles). All you need for that is a mere 33,390,720 pennies which would weigh a tad over 222,604 lbs!

Enjoy, and for the record I'm well past the Brooklyn Bridge Towers and rapidly closing in on the Great Pyramid of Giza!

I would like to know what percentage of copper pennies ever produced (since flying eagle introduced) are currently hoarded, how many are still in circulation, and how many have been lost/destroyed.

AG, there was a very interesting discussion around your question about one year ago.

Unfortunately, the link to the spreadsheet containing the total pennies in circulation versus the depletion per year is broken.

It's a building in Dubai and it's the tallest building in the world.

I'm leading my Giraffe to the Lincoln Memorial! As a side note, the Memorial is a must see if you go to DC. I used to live fairly close to DC and have been there many times.

Are you throwing that out?

Glad to see how others are stacking up!

I was kinda concerned that someone like HoardCopperByTheTon would tell me that I didn't go far enough to define his hoard, but apparently even his hoard doesn't extend to the stratosphere.

Happy hunting everyone!
