Quick question... what's the OLDEST coin you have? For the purpose of this particular thread, I would like to stick with coins with the date actually on them, not ancient coins. Mine is... a 1687 British threepence.

If you are limiting this to Christian dated coins, I have a Norwich farthing copper token dated 1670, a Charles II 1672 farthing, and my earliest is an Elizabeth I 1583 six pence hammered SILVER coin.

Oooohhh, nice. NDFARMER, I didn't pay much for it. If I recall correctly, I traded some vintage baseball cards for it and a few other British coins. :) |

The oldest coin I have with a definitive islamic date is an ABBASID fals (5c sized copper coin) minted in al-Kufa (Iraq) in the reign of Al-Mahdi. I have some earlier Islamic coins, but these earlier Islamic coins do not have a written date on them and can only be ascribed to the reign of the ruler (sort of like Roman coins). This coin has a AH163 date written in Arabic in the margin - three and one hundred and sixty. AH163, 779AD, is the Hejiri date (A.H. is Anno Hegirae) 163 lunar years (157 Gregorian calendar years) after 622AD when Mohammed fled from Mecca escaping to Medina to avoid persecution from his enemies.
Some examples of Abbasid coins can be seen in the link below:

I have a few mid 1500's (I'll pull then out later and check the dates)I also have one Roman coin, but I'm not real sure of the date. I also have a few Islamic looking coins I'm not sure where they are from or when. (Junk Bin finds!) |
Are you throwing that out? |

A widows mite up to 70 BC. I know that is not the thread you are looking for.
A cash coin from China with an Emperor from 1400's.
My favorite "old dated coin" is the Maria Teresa Taller. I think it is a 2002 remake, but it still has the old date.
I have a 1782 Spanish Milled Dollar.

Now if we're talking about the oldest coin, without a specified date, I've got an diobol (thick SILVER coin about half the diameter of a dime) from Ionia from circa 520BC. CLAZOMENAI (One of the Ionian city states and Greek trading colonies in Western Turkey) [GREEK REPUBLICAN PERIOD]. The obverse shows a winged boar and the reverse shows an incuse monogram. This was one of the first coins ever minted. Before SILVER was used in Ionia for coins, the initial minting of coins a few decades earlier used electrum (a GOLD and SILVER alloy).

At this point... Country's fals coin would be the oldest coin mentioned with a specific date shown on the coin. I'd like to know more about Aggressive Metal's "1530s Hungarian silver coin" too... And FLBANDIT's stuff too, when he gets it out... |

Those two were a 1687 British threepence and a 1723 British halfpenny. And somehow, I have three coins from 1724: a British farthing and halfpenny; and a Sweden ore. |

I actually have about 10 of them - different dates from the 1520s-1540s. They are hammered and depict the Madonna with Child. They are about the size of a British silver three-pence. |

Here is a few of my older coins, that I thought were 1500's but in fact are 1600's. You must be logged in to see this link. The pics aren't very good, but the coins are a 1665 and 1699 3 Kreuzers. I'll try to get some better pics, I'm not very good with computers. |

Why do you want to eliminate the truly old coins? My oldest is a silver piece from Kroton with a delphic tripod on it.. from about 510 BC. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

I don't. But I'm thinking there could easily be 3 "divisions" in this discussion. Ancient... AH or SH or "other dated... and "Christian dated." Hoard, what's your oldest coin showing a specific date? |

A trime is a nice coin. Hold your head up high! Those things were so easily bent... tiny, and easily lost. But very cool. Imagine if the US had started out with a big 3-cent copper in proportion to the cent and two cent coins. Wonder what it would have looked like. |

Don't feel bad, JTM. My oldest so far is just the IH I found in a Brinks box a couple years ago, an 1887 penny. I'd like to get a coin at least 200 years old sometime soon, just to have something that old. I've never been a focused collecter, I've just held onto whatever I've come across. But I'd like to get older coins at some point. |
