News from Lake Wobegone...
I've mothballed the private mint except for the odd occasional special project and accepted a job as a mineral explorationist working for a junior mining firm with projects across North and South America. I started in August and that's why I have not been posting much... I've been out in the deserts and mountains of Nevada and Utah wearing out the soles of my boots and the blade of my shovel. Gadzooks but the scenery is gorgeous! On a clear day you can see mountains 80 to 100 miles away from where I've been working.
With gold hovering at $800/oz, and uranium near $100/lb, the corporate mining companies are practically flogging themselves to come up with new reserves to bank up and convince new investors to come on board. The result is that anybody with a geology background and who is willing to travel and work with a shovel and pick can get a good job. Old prospects that were shelved in the eighties are being brought back out and reexamined. Even some old mines that were "played out" are getting a new look, now that milling can profitably run gold ore grading as low as 650 parts per billion of gold (that was considered waste rock in times past). If (like me) you have a degree or two tucked back in your beltbut had spent all those lean (low metal prices) years doing other things... now is the time to dust off that diploma and jump back in the game!
The Northwest Mining Association annual convention will be in Spokane Washington next week... monday through friday December 3-7. I will be there.
Later!
Tom
