I handsorted $5 worth today and got some of the best results I've ever had from Fed-wrapped cents. The $5 yielded 213 regular coppers along with a wheatie, 6 regular Canadian coppers and a 1943 King George VI cent. That's about 43% copper overall. The best roll contained 48 coppers and another had 47. I've had all copper rolls before from CWRs, but these are the best machine processed rolls that I've had. If only all sorting could yield such great percentages!
Happy hunting everyone.

Now if you only had some decent mining equipment.. |
If your percentages are low.. just sort more. If your percentages are high.. just sort more.

Gotta love those CWRs! When I got the rolls at the bank, the wrappers had the look of something a little older, and had the heft of something that was rich in copper. Well my instincts proved to be correct! The $5 contained 392 CU pennies (78.4%) as well as 3 wheaties and a dime. Gotta love percentages like that! This is what sorting must have been like in the early 80s.
Happy hunting everyone! |

Gotta love those CWRs!
Sorted $5 today and it yielded 453 coppers out of a possible 500. Plus three wheaties on top of that. That works out to just over 90%. I think that qualifies as a rich vein!
I often wonder how such concentrations of copper can occur. Was somebody cashing in random pennies that were sitting around for years, or was somebody stashing coppers purposefully but had to cash them in for economic reasons? Who knows, but I'm more than happy to get rolls that are 90% copper. It's like going back to 1983 or 1984 and sorting. |

Hmmm...this is intriguing, my dear Watson. With results that good, maybe you should buy more than $5?
Nice finds, though, congrats.

Some nostalgia....
When I pulled out coppers from my eaves that I had saved away in 1979-1981, in various sized cardboard boxes some of which had some mice in them at one time, others a little water damage, and still others that were in perfect shape; I re-boxed hundreds of these loose rolls into new $25 penny boxes. Of course, these were 100% copper as no coin could be dated later than 1981. I spot checked the rolls for dates to see when each cardboard box containing penny rolls were put away. For some boxes, the latest date was 1979, for others it was 1980 or 1981. Some rolls were BU bank rolls of these years that I got from my local bank. All 100% copper, of course.
However, I noticed that a few rolls looked even older. I opened a couple of these and found that they were completely devoid of wheaties (someone else had pulled them out many years ago). However, I found that most of these rolls had only Lincolns from 1959-1968, most very bright and new, with very little circulation as they would have been in 1968. It was sort of like making a connection to the distant past and feeling coins that were rolled up by someone over 40 years ago. Pulling pennies out of my eaves, I found a couple of old canvas $50 bags of pennies with the old lead seals and tags indicating the bank that sent them off to the Fed. I remembered that I got these from the Fed in 1979. I have never opened these seals. As I pulled them from my eaves, I could feel that inside each canvas bag, the coins were rolled. Perhaps, some penny hoarder in the future will have a fast beating heart when his eyes see these bags. |

I bought $10 worth. If the rest of the batch is similarly rich, I'll post the results tomorrow.
I still haven't figured out a way to know what the teller is going to hand you when you ask for pennies, though. |

Nice vein- keep mining! Is it just me or does reading stories like this make you want to go out and buy all the pennies you can get? I'm still relatively new to this, but, judging from the sound of it, some of you guys do go out and buy all the pennies you can get. |

Back when I started sorting.. we always got 100% copper. Of course back then we just pulled out the wheaties and threw everything else back. |

Truth is.. The wild feathered liberty was rare even way back then. Of course we didn't know about special feathered dance back then either. I never found one in the wild until a few years ago when I had stepped up my sorting a bit. |

Back in those days.. we couldn't have used a Ryedale even if we would have had one.. the Large cents wouldn't fit though it. |
