Excellent question! I can't wait to read the answers. For what its worth I would say four boxes high, but then I'm conservative.

I don't think the issue is height itself, but height relative to the width of the base. If you have a wide enough base, you can stack 'em up pretty high. That's why mountains are a lot higher than the Washington Monument.

I'd stack them interlocked like bricks.

Are these boxes full of pennies or just the empty box? I regularly have a stack of about 5 feet in height. Does this get special mention at the Penny Stacking Games?

My nickel boxes are full of 50 rolls each.
My concern is that Canadian nickels are slightly thinner than American nickles.
I think the boxes were designed for American nickels
So there is a 1/4" gap between the top of the box and top of my Canadian nickel rolls.
I was wondering how much weight these boxes could tolerate before crushing down this 1/4" gap.
I was hoping to be able to stack 4 or 5 boxes high.

conduct your own experiment and find out. You can cut an extra lid from an empty box (or any other cardboard) to fill the space if it does crush. I routinely stack five high without any problems.

Hoard now and hold on!

beauanderos,

That is a great idea. Thanks !
I will cut out some cardboard shims and relieve the weight off the cardboard sides.

I stack mine 4 high and a row of 30 stacks long. That gives you $3000.00 which gives you one ton to a row. I do not have a problem with storage space but if you interlock them so they don't fall over and if your floor can support it I don't see any problem with going 8 - 10 high.

It is very important to keep your tonnes of pennies in rows where they are easy to count. I can see the barn full of rows of copper penny boxes now :) I love it!

And hopefully JadeDragon, no one reading this knows where you barn is! Or can figure it out by various methods which we should not discuss here. If so, you may eventually have a very sad, sickening feeling in your stomach.
