Does anyone actually keep and store their separated zinc pennies? They're 3rd in line (after copper pennies and nickels) in terms of percentage of face value, something like 60% of face. Advantage is saving the whole hassle of dumping, obvious disadvantage is more storage space required and more money to spendon boxes.

YES, I keep the 1985, the 1987 and the 2009 pennies (all coins from 2009). These aren't being kept for any intrinsic value or numismatic value. Just being sorted out and kept as a thoughtful, loving gift from the heart for my son and his wife. That's their birth years and the year they married.
Enjoy your coin searches, everyone. |

for what its worth i keep all 2009 out as well and have been rolling them seperately.even though they are not uncirculated they are as close to it as you can get at this point in time and i feel my kids and grandkids will be very happy what they will be worth in the future.as you may well know,so far the LP3 and LP1 far out number the LP2 and LP4 |

I do save 2009 zincs also, I keep an open shotgun roll wrapper on the workbench for each design. As I fill one I tuck it away and start a new one. I agree that LP-3 is the most common. |

If you don't need the money to reinvest than it might be better to have some form of coinage in your physical possession versus digits on some computer. People will always recognize change and if you start to get short you could always cash some in.

There's nothing wrong with keeping zinc... if you have that much money that you can afford to tie it up. If, as I suspect, we have a bad bout of hyperinflation in the next few years, even the zinc pennies will be worth three or four cents apiece. However, the same investment in copper, nickel, silver or gold would likely provide a better return. That said... there is a fair chance that the dollar could get devalued and a new fiat currency brought in to replace it. If, for instance, they replaced the dollar with the Amero... and it took five "old" dollars to buy one "new" one, it is extremely unlikely that they would devalue the existing coins by the same ratio. They would leave them as having the same fractional worth of the new dollar as they did of the old. So... if a devaluation of five to one does take place someday, then your coins just became worth five times what they were worth the day before. Think it can't happen? Look at North Korea... 99 to one devaluation. I keep little money in the banks, just enough to pay bills. What I keep outside is mostly in coins, just on the off chance this scenario plays out. |
Hoard now and hold on!

I used to keep the 2009 LP1s, PL2s and LP3s, but since I have enough of those I've begun throwing them back. I'm still keeping the LP4s, but eventually I'll throw those back too. I also keep any AU pennies before 2000.
I don't envision myself keeping zincs en mass until the copper pennies are pretty much gone. Would we bother saving copper pennies and nickels if there were still large numbers of silver dimes, quarters and halves in circulation? |

I keep the shiny ones. The new zincs consistantly sell for more than the coppers you guys are hoarding. |

I remember when the zinc cent's melt value went over 100% of its face value. It didn't last long though. But some say we are running low on zinc too. |
