Conga rats, Kid, on entering an elite circle Now then, what does anyone think the world and our environment would be like if Peak Oil is for real? Let's begin with the supposition that gasoline is $10 a gallon and rationed to ten gallons per person per week and go from there.

The suburbs would be upset and broke? I think you'd have a lot of poor people missing work, a lot of local governments cutting services like patrol cars and school buses, and obviously the tourist "industry" would be devastated. On the bright side rush hour wouldn't be as bad ;)
Long-term, you would see a re-alignment back towards the old way of doing things: local produce, neighborhood stores and resturants rather than strip-malls, and trains rather than cars and trucks for distance shipping. |

For the purpose of this brainstorming exercise, let's presume that starting now, the price of gasoline begins to rise fifty cents a month, then levels off at the $10 mark in about a year from now. I live close to work, and don't even burn thru ten gallons a week, so my expenses would definitely go up... but I'd like to hear how it would impact others. Imagine all the people who would no longer be able to commute long distances? Here in California that would have a huge impact. |

Don't worry. There's no such thing as "peak oil" right around the corner. While it may run out someday, it won't be in our lifetime or our children's lifetime or their children's children's lifetime.
Now, reduced refining capacity is another thing. They have been closing refineries since the 1970's in order to supposedly reduce costs. Because of this, anytime there is a hiccup in the system it causes instant volatility in the price of refined crude. The real reason for closing the refineries is to control the output not costs. By controlling output they capitalize on these hiccups when they occur, planned or not.
The price of crude itself is driven by speculation of short time delivery, not the overall supply.
Again, there's no need to worry, they won't kill the goose that laid the Golden egg...They'll just squeeze it for everything its worth.

I'll add this though.
If we keep rattling the saber at Iran, we could easily see $8-$10 gas.

Where I live TONS of people commute into Chicago daily. The impact on gas limits would be almost unthinkable. Job loss of massive proportions, businesses shutting down. The nature of my work means I have to drive around a lot, checking on different sites.
How would the gas limit work for business with delivery or some other normal fleet that consumes far beyond 10 gallons a week? |

Remember, this is just a hypothetical scenario to stimulate consideration of what might happen someday |

Besides being extremely inflationary for ALL fuel and oil related items. Food Food and Food. I imagine any regional commerce would diminish and force more localized commerce. I could see local taxes going up as the city and county governments would need to limit travel while still trying to maintain some type of service. Travel could become physically unsafe as car jackings would probably increase exponentially. Gas syphoning would peak possibly even see fuel trucks with armed escorts. On the brighter side. Neighbors would have to learn to economize and "love thy neighbor" could take on new meaning as we would probably become more close knit with home gardens and local commerce becoming the norm again. No more driving all over to seek the best bargains. I could sell my lawn mower as I wouldn't use that any more. Non essentials would probably be cut out. There goes cable tv. School sports might take a hit as all non essential activities that provide savings for fuel to keep buses going would be required. Think WINTER how about those gas guzzling snow plows. These services would be drastically cut back. We might even see privitazion of road to hold down costs. Think toll roads controlled by regional government. How about heat for the house because if fuel gas spikes so will heat oil and Liquid gas as well as propane. Don't try to call and ambulance with a pre paid credit card. Police service might even cost you to get a response. Enough I'm scaring and depressing myself. Thanks Beauanderos. pick a happier topic next time will you. (only kidding because this should be in the back of peoples minds and we really should prepare because you never know) One only needs to look at Europe some of their areas gas is close to $10.00. |
