Hello all, been reading the forum for a few weeks this is my first post. I've been sorting pennies with my dad (by hand) for the past 2 weeks or so on almost a daily basis. Started by asking the teller for $5 worth and then yesterday we bought 2 $25 boxes our biggest purchase so far. We are small time, but it's a lot of fun, and we both LOVE finding Wheaties. I'd say we've found about 100 Wheaties in about $100 worth of searching (oldest being 2 1919's).

Anyways...we just put in an order for a box of Half dollars and I was wondering exactly what I was looking for. Here is what I know:

1964 = 90%
1965-1970 = 40%

I've skimmed some other posts and seen people talk about Silver Proofs? and some other things. I was wondering if anyone could give me an idea of anything else to look for besides 1970 and prior.

Thanks

WELCOME to RealCent!!

Feel free to post your SILVER finds in the Half Dollar and Other Coins section.

90% Half Dollars - All Barbers (1915 and prior), ALL Walking Liberty Halves (1916-1947), ALL Franklin Halves (1948-1963), 1964 Kennedy Halves, 1992-S to 2010-S (very infrequently found since most of these will be clads). Very scarce, but still found occasionally, are the US commemorative 90% halves 1954 and before.

40% Half Dollars - 1965-1970 (circulation strikes and proofs) and the 1976-S (circulation strikes and proofs - most of these are clads).

GOOD LUCK!!

If you have more questions, please don't hesitate to post your questions.

Thanks for the quick response! I'll be sure to keep my eyes open for any "S" Halves that I may find.

Remember that most of the Kennedy proofs (S-mints) will be clads. These have some marginal value and many folks keep them.

Also, some folks keep NIFCs (Not Intended for Circulation) halves - 1987 and 2002 to date clads which have low mintages.

While my dad and I are waiting for the box to come in we figured we'd take a walk/ride around town to banks and see if we can pick up any rolls of halves in the meantime. We live in a place where there are probably close to 50 banks within a 5 mile radius. We stopped into I'd say about 7 or 8 banks asking for Halves. ZERO said they carry rolls of Halves...one bank had 1 half dollar, and one bank had 5 half dollars. The bank teller did say she had some Eisenhower dollars (12) so we bought them all. No silver in any of the coins, but a few tellers took our names and said they would be happy to give us a call if any customers brought coins in. Can't wait for the box of halves to come in, until then it's sorting another box of pennies.

Quick update (I also posted this on the Tracking thread)

All but 13 rolls in the box are searched (final 13 will be searched Sunday or Monday). Also picked up $1 in halves from a bank teller.

TOTAL FOUND

8 40% Kennedy
1 90% Kennedy
1 90% Franklin
1 90% Walker

Like I said in the other post...a VERY lucky day for my dad and I, but we are LOVING it.
