Is anyone familiar with or have a 1 oz silver round that was minted from the US Strategic Stockpile Assay Office San Francisco 1981? I purchased some a few days ago and something just doesn't seem correct. The coin itself is slightly smaller in diameter than an ASE by about the thickness of the rim of the ASE. The flip test doesn't sound great either compared to an ASE or a 1964 Kennedy. Also there is a strange golden/amber tarnish on the coins. I thought it was toning but when I inspected one of the coins it just rubbed off on my finger. I'd appreciate any comments from someone who has a legitamate coin.

| Sorry can't do a picture. However, I went to a site called coinpage and they have pictures of two different issues of that coin in 1981. Mine is the second one. I noticed that on those pictures, there are strands of wheat on either side of the eagle (none on mine), There is a gap between the E & R in silver on mine ( none on the picture) also the stars in the flag are in very nice rows (in the picture) not on mine. I went on **AY to look a pictures of various individuals selling this exact coin (looks like there are many being sold) similiar to mine and only a rare one or two that look like the one on coinpage. I'm beginning to get nervous about this. Would like to see if anyone could add a picture on this site. |

A regular 1 oz round will be smaller in diameter than a 1 oz ASE.
The amber color that rubs off could be from just about anything. A flip that it was stored in that got a little moisture or anything really.
An ASE and a 64 Kenndy will each sound differnt in the flip test becuase of the differnt weight and 64 Kennedy is 90%. I would weight your 1 oz round in question and see if it weights 31.1grams |

I remember those coins and the bars. They had a 1oz round, 10oz bar, and 100oz bar.
Mid 1990's, one COINage ad had them for $5.55, $55, and $550. Course I was young not very liquid in the disposable income department.... |

Ok. Here's an update. After further inspection of the coin I noticed some things. 1) Every coin had an identical hairline "crack like" mark from the eagles wing to the edge of the coin. There was a noticable gap between the E & R in the word silver (unlike the gaps between any other letters). Most importantly the coin was missing the wheat stalks that surrond the eagle. I brought this to the sellers attention and told him the picture he listed showed the wheat stalks. Etc.etc. He quickly apologized and refunded my money instantly. Funny thing is on went on **ay and those fakes are all over the place. I'm 100% sure now! Most of the sellers are on the west coast. I went to coinpage to see an authentic coin. These are definitley reproductions dare I say fake. PLEASE BEWARE Everyone. |
