When I get corroded pennies, I just toss them in a separate container. If they are just plain nasty, I dump them with the zincs. |

Rosco, Huh? You're not making a lot of sense. Spend the uglies or work them into your dumps. |

In search of old posts I see that a soak in WD40 can clean! I have about 350 an trying to finish my fourth box. My sorts have mostly been under 20% so I want to keep them. |

Nothing wrong with keeping them. Store them separate from other copper. If the ice chest had some moisture in it when you closed the lid that would account for the corrsion on your stored ones. The ice chest is air tight and wont allow the moisture to escape so it gets on the coins. It's best to store coins where they are allowed to breath so to speak. In my opinion a tumbler is an invaluable tool for CRH's and metal detectorists. A cheap one can be found at an arts and crafts store for about $30. When you get a hand full of dirty cents throw them in the tumbler for an hour and they come out clean. |

Rosco... think about this before you take on a long time-consuming endeavor to clean the 350 corroded cents that you have. I know you become possessive once you've sorted them... they become "mine"... but at twenty percent find rate you only need to search less than one box to replace them. How long does that take? Compared to how long it will take to clean them (and will it even do a good job?) You do the math, but I think you'd be much better off just getting rid of them and finding replacements. IMHO Maybe clean the wheaties, though |
Hoard now and hold on!

I keep a little plastic container filled with water next to my sink. When I come across a badly corroded coin, I'll toss it in the container to let it soak. After a few days I use a small wire brush and some abrasive powder cleanser like Ajax to scour the corrosion off. Seems to do the trick pretty well. For mildly corroded coins I don't bother with this process. I store my pennies in a dry place and keep them in sealed plastic bottles, so I don't think they'll be very likely to develop any corrosion. |

The Ice chest was reported by the Teller an bank that I picked up from as the rolls were marked with teller stamp. She said the coins we given to teller who rolled an sold to bank. This was my highest percent copper an its actually about $6.00 bucks worth.
I have a tumbler available an will try water an some soap , Thanks all
Yes I'm tight an do feel I own the coins now.
PS plenty of BUMs but don't think they would take Pennys Too much trouble |

rosco, try adding an abrasive to the tumbler such as aquarium gravel. I guess small pebbles would do the same. |

I don't understand people's preoccupation w/ "dirty" cents. Dirty or clean, they're all worth the same. And lets face it, as far as coppers go, they're all pretty much dirty. Some are just *much* more so than others... |
