Went to one of my Bank of America dump branches to turn in $100 of zincs. Saw a teller from three weeks earlier who had told me he had some of "the big dollars, old ones." At the time, after an internal debate, I had told him I would give him eight dollars apiece for them, if they were Morgans or Peace, and not Ikes. Today I asked him about them and he replied "sure, got em right here, I knew you'd be back eventually." He proceeded to pour out a small pile of silver... but it was just halves. Hiding my disappointment, I gave the pile a quick appraisal and then decided "heck with it, I'll be fair." I offered him 10x face and he took it. Maybe he could have gotten 11x at the coin shop, maybe not. I think we were both satisfied. I was able to buy $6.50 face at $13.98 melt value... and the best part, is now he's on my team and is eager to find as much more for me as he can... although he did declare that silver coins coming through were "rare." I showed him how to edge check and found a 1967 while we were doing it. Offered him another dollar and he took it

Do banks typically have policies on allowing tellers or other employees to take more than face value for Ag coins on the job?

Didn't think about that. I could have gotten the 67 for face, come to think of it. The other halves he had he'd stashed away a long time ago, he wasn't "selling" out of his till.

I am going to one of my banks tomorrow to buy two rolls of silver quarters from a teller. I always pay them melt value and teach them what to look for. I always tell them about what will happen when our financial system crashes and how those coins could feed their family. I then let them make an informed decision whether they still want to sell them or keep them. I live in a small town and these are my neighbors. I promote self reliance and survival to whoever will listen. I have more than enough PM's already but will always buy more especially if it will ease someones financial pain. I just bought a new Ryedell and love it. After sorting for myself I will offer to sort for family and friends at no costs to them. I want to see everyone informed, Educated, and enriched.

TL... great message you're spreading. I explained to the teller why I was buying the silver, that fiat dollars are essentially worthless with no backing, and that someday we would return to using silver as money... but all he said was "maybe." No matter how much you try to educate some people about silver... they are literally not buying it

You should spread the word that you will sort... and PAY 1.1x face for coppers that are brought mixed to you. All they have to do is bring the mixed and return the zinc. You get to stay home and sort... it could just work

Thanks for the kind welcome. I have a very good working relationship with the banks in my town. At first the vault teller was reluctant when I started asking her for $200.00 a day in pennies and informed her that I would be returning about 80% the next day. She balked and got the manager. I explained that I now own a business that sorts and sells copper pennies along with my computer business. She asked if the pennies would be melted. I explained to her that no the people were buying the pennies because they were frightened by the falling Dollar and the current fiat monetary system. She still looked reluctant. I then showed her a copy of my business license my tax # and that I was a full blown and not a limited Corporation. She still looked skeptical and asked me if this is very profitable. I then showed her a bank deposit slip where I had just made a large cash deposit (I didn't tell her it was from a property I had sold.) She looked at me in shock and told the vault teller to Quote " Take care of Mr. Wolfe's needs."I laughed hard when I got out of the bank. They even get a cart from the back room and help me load the pennies in my van because they know I have had several heart attacks. I love small town life. I have three other banks in town that sell me pennies but all my zincs go to my bank for deposit. I might even sell a few after I and all friends and family have enough. Still rollin!!! Mark

I am a copper paramedic. In order to minimize the possibilities that you might have another heart attack you need to limit your exposure to stress and excitement. Therefore, during your sorting, if you should encounter any Flying Eagle cents, or an 1877, or even just a 1909S-VDB please do not let your pulse race. Should this happen, just take several long deep breaths and then PM me for an address to mail the toxic pennies to. Your continued health is my utmost concern

my neice is head teller at a large bank and she told me that she or anyone else got caught dealing in coins at the bank would be fired immediately and probably wouldn't get a job at another bank.. I also find it odd that anyone working at a bank didn't know how to edge ck a coin, he must have been real new at handling coins.

To be honest a lot of tellers don't know how to edge test; I have shown several what to look for.

Won't that mean you'll get skunked at banks more often??

After my wife"educated" the ladies down at our local small town banks, and a little reinforcement in the form of a few batches of cookies/desserts from our store, they all look for the silver coins, and call us when they have a few gathered up. It's good for several dollars per month at actual dollar for dollar cost. COOKIE POWER RULES!

Hot Pizza on a rainy day works really well. I have it delivered to them with a couple of two liter pops. The girls really love not having to go out in the rain for lunch. They now refer to me as the coin man.

The bank tellers that I deal with are not allowed to sell you any coins except at face value. Some do collect the silver and then sell it on their own time.

I figure if I educate them about what silver to look for, they will be nicer about letting me have my nickels and pennies; I don't search halves or dimes or quarters. Any time I go in I ask if a customer dropped off any halves but I wouldn't ask them to order them for me.

They seem to be nicer about ordering coins for me now that they have a better understanding of why I am searching. In fact, the one teller gave me that buffalo nickel she found the other week.
