In texas hill country coming back from visiting friends and stopped by some banks. two had nothing(one had but wouldn't sell to non-customer). Third had 12 rolls and some loose. I bought them all.
Six rolls had silver, a lot!
I got nearly 3 1/2 rolls of 40% plus 5 90%. All Kenedy halves.
Funny thing is that many of the clad halves AND MANY of the silver 40 and 90% halves had been scratched. A clean fine scratch, some in two or three parts(angled) but either on the front or the back. Never both.
WHy would someone do that? Did they know they were silver? Was it done back in the late 60's or early 70's?
Sad thing is that there was a very nice BU 1967 that had the scratch. And I wanted to set it aside as a BU half so badly!.
Oh, and I got two boxes of cents at a fourth bank, traded 5 rolls of searched halves for them. AND ONE WAS ANOTHER BOX OF SHIELD CENTS! Check BUY it NOW section for these!

Too bad about the scratches  , but SILVER is SILVER. 
If you think back to a time when SILVER was $4.25 per ounce in 2001, a 90%er would be worth only $1.51 (3X face). At that time, a 40%er would be worth less - 63c. At that time, I can see people only interested in the 90%ers, discarding the 40%ers with the rest of the clads. |

Scratches are common on lots of NIFC's.
I am talking about these one line intentional scratches.
I never saw them on silver but I believe it is an attempt to destroy collector value, although I do not know exactly why in the case of silver.
