Ok so have put togather my Indian head collection thanks to some members on the board (SottyTX) and a good friend. All that is left for me are 3 60's and a handful of 70's. I was wondering what are your thoughts on when to buy key dates mainly the 1877 and 09 S. I just cant see myself chalking up between $100-300 dollars right now per coin, but I know the longer I wait the higher the coin could possible get. So what have other collectors done. The prices stated are from ebay, I have talked to my two local coindealers but WOW I am not getting one from them any time soon. Also what are your thought on replicas, I personally dont like the idea but have seen a couple of completed collections that contain them.

I'm in the same boat as you, I have accumulated almost complete collections of several denominations except for the key dates, i'm missing the 5 key wheaties, the 1916-D mercury, the 1885 & 1886 V nickels, some early date buffalos, the indians you mention and some others. I can't justify the costs associated with those high priced coins as well, even in the low grades. I'd rather buy bullion or junk silver with that money instead. As far as replicas are concerned, I'd rather have a hole in the collection than fill it with a replica but that is my opinion.

I am of the opinion that I would rather leave the sets incomplete and move on to a new collection. For instance, instead of purchasing that 1909S IHC, you could work on a different denomination set, or even a second indian head cent, or upgrade rough coins. I avoid any single coins, especially of low content value, that cost that much. Silver or gold coins of high value are one thing, but a small piece of copper for a couple hundred? Id rather just have more cheap coins! That being said, I would still jump on chances to get coins like that are far below what they are worth, but I would resell them at profit rather than keep them.

MOVING SALE!!! Selling Copper Cents 1.4 shipped - in limited quantities PM me and we'll talk.

Thanks guys but I keep a running set of doubles on all collections, I am more of a collector than a hoarder though. I have doubles of most all folders, one is a folder that contains mostly VF + and anything lower goes in the second. I am really now at the point were I either start a third set or bight the bullet and complete one of them. I guess I can always finish that Canadian set I always meant to get started.

If you have double sets of some coins, why don't you sell what you have double of (maybe on here) and use the proceeds to buy your key date coins?

From an investment perspective, the key date coins will outperform the common dates. I dont like to buy too low grade, however. Buy a least an F-12, so it will be pleasant to look at. I would hate to spend $300 on a coin that looked like poo.

Grandpa always told me, "Back in 1964..." I listened.

I think I will finish out the Semi-keys I lack and any of the doubles I get on those I may use the proceeds on Key dates or filling my 7070 album. Thanks guys for the help. If I do buy a key date it will be top of the line, the way I see it you only buy them once, so get the best you can.

I'm right there with everyone else, I need 4 wheaties, and some 60s and 70s Indians. I plan to finish the sets one day, but can't afford it right now. My tentative plan is to save up some of my scrap metal, set aside some silver, and perhaps sell some copper. This kind of spreads the cost out, and brings the actual cost down as I can make profit on the sale of scrap, pennies and some of my silver. I'm still only looking at perhaps one major Key Date per year, but it's about the only way I can do it.

Are you throwing that out?

Buy them for yourself as a birthday or christmas present. A couple hundred on a key date does not seem so bad if it's all you buy yourself for christmas or for your birthday.

Well I took the weekend and did some thinking about the topic. Also ran some numbers did alot of research and other stuff that would only clutter up the topic so I will quit here. Anyway decided to go for it and fininsh the collection, except the 1877, and also decided to start the Liberty nickel collection don't know why just felt like I had put it off long enough and was jelous of Mikep2020 and his collection. Thanks guys for the input and if you have any of the IH or run across any of the dates I have a WTB post of the ones I need.

I would either try to buy them from a private party or I would go to a coin show and find a dealer that business is slow. The slower a dealer's business is the more likely they are to make you deals. Just walk around the show talking to every dealer asking them how the show and business are ect ect.
