I'd like to start dealing with the public at large without having to shell out fees to the likes of paypal and others.

What do you use, and what do you think are some of the best methods

realcent, craigslist. are 2 ways to avoid some of ebays fees, but people here do use paypal with or without the gift option.

I've been selling here for about 18 months now, and the site has grown by 850%!!!

Although it is primarily a site for postage stamps, there are well over 20,000 coin related items.
