I am new to the hobby. Is it better to buy proof or uncirculated coins? For instance, I am looking to purchase the 2009 US mint coin set to begin my collection (I am also collecting circulated coins).

Thanks.

There is no firm or definite answer to this. "Buy what you like" is the common recommendation.

If you're looking for an "investment" then you might want to look at other coin types. Anything that is made to be a "collectible" is usually not worth much in the future.

Buy what you like and enjoy if you want to keep the items for your hobby.

I picked up several 2009 mint sets, just because of the real copper pennies in them. I see these as doing well in the long term(gradkids will probably be the ones to benifit though).

Buy what you like is the correct answer though.

Pick what you like, but if you pick proofs, there is a nice collection for sale in the auction area.
